OK!
A friend of mine turned me on to this movie, and WOW!, it looks pretty cool: The girl looks a bit like the little girl in 'Le Papillon', but it's not.
Here's the IMDB link:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0410445/#comment
Synopsis:
Eight-year-old Eva and her mother have a very positive CHILD-TO-CHILD-RELATION. The mother is incapable of mature behaviour when problems arise. When the mother forgets to fetch Eva at school in her car, Eva does not know the way home. Panicking and crying she just runs and is overrun by a car. The driver is obviously innocent. He is a second-hand bookseller (Etienne) and a mountain climber and has a phenomenal memory. The hospital cannot tell whether Eva will ever wake up from her coma, or will speak or move. But it is important that she is much spoken to while she is in coma. The bookseller takes upon himself the task the mother cannot do. He visits the child for hours every day and tells her Jack London's snow stories, which he knows by heart. Eventually Eva wakes up. She is still mute and will go only if Etienne holds her hands and actively walks her. She is bored by all kinds of child play but fascinated by the snowy mountains that can be seen from the hospital. Suddenly ...
(The REST of the quote is a MAJOR plot spoiler, so I'd advise you NOT to read it until you've seen this touching movie...)

Hopefully THIS turns out to be as cool as it looks [in the 'Le Papillon' vein]!
I'll also keep an eye out for subtitles...

Not much use for me without the subs I'm afraid, which is why I've stayed away from this.

If anyone finds English subs I'll be all over this.

I'm sorry, emuler.
I'm sorry that subs are such a necessity for you.
I'm American, and unfortunately I only speak English. I wish to hell when I was younger that the other languages I tried to take in school [Spanish, German, Italian] came easier to me. Possibly then I might have expanded my narrow linguistic world...
The one foreign language I have been able to somewhat grasp is ASL. I learned ASL as a means of communicating with a deaf cousin of mine, then I went on to work with the hearing impaired groups in the churches I've attended. Not being hearing impaired myself I still feel I can say, due to my experiences, I somewhat understand the plight of those that are.
However one thing I've discovered in my years of watching foreign movies is that with a bit of attention to the story, despite the language barrier, I can usually understand what's going on. I might miss detailed specifics, but the general gist of the film I can comprehend.
All that being said I can't tell you how offended I am by the attitude your remark conveys...
To completely, absolutely blow off any film simply because subs [for whatever reason] are not available, again, takes me totally aback. More so than it should, I suppose, but it does...
A good movie is worth watching any way you can. Period.
This really is a good movie. I'm sorry you feel as you do.

There are movies, and then there are movies. With some, the dialogue is not an issue. A fun children's movie, for example, like the recently released Cash Cache, or a skin flick like Maladolescenza. However, this appears to be a serious movie in which character development and relationship building are of prime importance, and hence the ability to follow the dialogue is crucial, at least for me.
Take the case of Ponette, for example. Plot is fairly straightforward. Kid's mother dies; kid learns to cope. With the subs, however, I found the movie to be totally fascinating; a deeply enriching experience. One of my favourite films, to be watched again and again.
I, in turn, am sorry that you take movies so lightly that it doesn't matter to you whether you follow the dialogue or not. Perhaps that holds good for the majority of Hollywood fare, but rare gems like this one need to be appreciated and savoured.

I think it's hilarious that two people who are clearly both more passionate about movies than 99.99% of people are disparaging each other's passion for movies
And the American is promoting unsubbed movies, something 99.9999% of Americans wouldn't touch.
I sometimes watch unsubbed movies, most often when considering releasing them here, but even if I think I have the gist of the movie there is always doubt in my mind, and the nuances which often make a movie fulfilling are missed, and that lessens the experience. Since I can't immediately watch everything I get fom FLM, I have lots of movies which *are* subbed I can watch instead: if I have viewing choices available I can fully appreciate, then I need to be in a mood for a challenge to pick an unsubbed movie, and that movie has to really grab me.

I think you'll find that most of the regular contributors here are more passionate about movies than most & as such slight differences of opinion are bound to arise, especially within the confines of a forum. I think emuler's comment here was taken slightly out of context.........I'm sure no offence was meant, simply an expression of preference.
Whilst I'm not really qualified to comment on this particular release as my comprehension of French is good enough to get by I generally don't like subtitled movies, finding they require a far greater degree of concentration, especially if taking my eyes off the screen. However, this needs to be balanced with my desire to know what is going on in a movie. Arguably my best solution is an English dub, even though some of them are pretty awful.

Getting back on-topic you are quite right kev.........a truly beautiful movie. Thanks for this. I struggled a bit but ended up fully knowing what was going on. Frustrating really.......my French was quite good at school & I never have too much trouble when I visit the country. I just wish the movie would sometimes S P E A K S L O W L Y
