MKV files - play or convert
MKV files - play or convert
Can play with MPC but if you want to convert ? I have tried MKV to AVI converter but just says either file corrupt - not true - it plays on MPC, or cannot find decoder (I hate to install decoders on PC).
What I would like is to play it in VLC but won't do that.
Failing that, convert to avi/xvid/divx whichever.
Thanks for any and all advice.

last time i tried to do it it was a nightmare, but i used a direct conversion program, perhaps the guides above will be easier
VLC doesn't support mkv

Re: MKV files - play or convert
MKV files are containers with the video- and audio stream(s) and maybe subtitle files in it.
To convert into a different format you have to demux the streams first.
I am using MKVExtract GUI for it.

Re: MKV files - play or convert
Hmm site appears down right now
So if can get hold of this have to do this yes ?
1. Downlaod and install MKVToolnix and MKVExtract GUI to same directory.
2. Demux the mkv file using the above two tools (to a directory ?)
3. Use something to convert to avi/xvid/divx (never can work out which is correct format to convert to !!)
Maybe one of you kind chaps can fill in my knowledge gaps ?
Cheers

Re: MKV files - play or convert
I'm sorry but unless you want to play MKV's in a regular DVD player I don’t understand the point of converting the files, its just easier to install the right software and just play them...
All you need is Haalis media splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/) this splitter will work for any Direct Show based Media player, that means WMP, MPC, BSplayer etc. Once installed the files should play, this assumes you have the right audio/video codecs installed to begin with, eg if you could not play a AVI encoded with DivX you wont be able to play a MKV encoded with DivX.
I usually use MPC + Haalis Media Splitter but every MKV file I've tried works with VLC, it has its own built in splitter, if you look in the preferences under input/codecs>demuxers its right there

It doesn’t?Rich wrote:VLC doesn't support mkv
