I can't view new posts since having my username changed. Can admin help?

It's not the change of your username that's causing it, the same thing's happening to me, looks like a bug in the script

If the new posts link isn't working, you can at least make it a lot easier to see new posts by using search.

Go to search.
Set the "search previous" dropdown to 1 Day, 7 Days, or whatever will find all the post since your last visit.
Put * into the keyword search field, so it won't complain about a blank search.
Click search.

Unfortunately searches other than new posts etc. aren't able to be bookmarked.

I find that all new highlighted threads become unhighlighted (is that a word?..it is now!) once you have viewed any thread for the first time and return to the main forum page.

That is easily overcome by opening threads in new windows

There are "New topic" buttons in each subforum or "Reply" buttons in each topc.

Sometimes, clicking the "new posts" link only shows the first new link in a sub forum. Is it possible to change this functionality to "unread links"?

Look at the 3rd selection from the top. Is this what you mean?
