making a dvd from avi.
transcode it using nero vision. takes awhile. then you can take the disc you made and put it in a stand alone player and burn it on a stand alone burner set the chapter breaks you can have a good dvd made into actual dvd not just one file.
Re: making a dvd from avi.
That's one way. Useful if I am making a copy of a movie for a friend. (Though one time I did so and found that friend's DVD player didn't play anything except manufactured DVDs, no DVDRs. Oh, well.)
What I have done for normal viewing, though, is buy a DVD player which directly plays DivX/XviD files. That way I don't need to take the time-consuming step of converting the file to DVD video, and I save on DVD storage space since I can fit multiple movies on a single data DVD. Not all AVIs work in every DivX-compatible player, but this works more often than not.

Can't really help you much, British TV is quite technically different from US TV.Debaser wrote:Im holding out for a good a value one with a record function.

I will say one thing though. I used to hold out for the "perfect" electronic appliance that filled all my needs, and spent more for it. Sometimes this is the best policy but other times the combination doesn't work. When I was looking for a DVD recorder the ones I found that were cheap enough for my budget didn't do DivX. But standalone DivX-capable players are cheap enough (here) that that doesn't bother me, I have a separate DVD player which handles DivX. Added together I paid less than I would have paid for the perfect single unit.
And my expectations have become lower. I too have a stereo system which I purchased in the 80s and still works great. But I think DVD players are different -- stereos are all solid state with no moving parts, but DVD players have complicated trays and optics and I really don't expect them to last forever. The technology is advancing fast enough that that doesn't bother me much.

Try using DVD Flick, it works great and it's FREE, burns a DVD from 45 video formats

I've mentioned this topic in a previous responsecharlottegainsbourg1 wrote:transcode it using nero vision. takes awhile. then you can take the disc you made and put it in a stand alone player and burn it on a stand alone burner set the chapter breaks you can have a good dvd made into actual dvd not just one file.
loverboy wrote:If my memory serves me correctly cg1 likes to transcode & burn to DVD for playing on standalone DVD players. ConvertXtoDVD will do this & handle subtitle files. If exactly the same file name & in the same directory it will automatically load the subtitle, otherwise you need to add it manually. Version 3 of ConvertXtoDVD appears unsatisfactory.........go for the last release of Version 2. This is not free software but available everywhere with keys, keygens, cracks & patches. I'll let someone else explain the pros/cons & how they work
The Nero Suite is OK (I use it for burning) but otherwise tends to cram a little too much into one utility. There are better alternatives (some of them free!) for most of what Nero achieves.loverboy wrote:Nero makes a good job of transcoding, especially the later versions BUT to the best of my knowledge you can't import the subtitle files. Go for what I suggested in my previous post...........ConvertXtoDVD & the version you want is 2.2.3.258 which is the last before they moved to V3 with horrible flashy menus & much faster transcoding. Unfortunately it's no longer stable & forgiving.......in fact they've fucked up a perfectly good piece of software. The version I've mentioned is likely available on eMule & certainly on Usenet. Try to get one with a product key, otherwise use a keygen or crack at your own peril!
It's also a complete bugger should you wish to uninstall..........the Nero General Clean Tool & a pretty abrasive registry cleaner will be needed.
........but closer than it was. Current UK TV's & DVD recorders/players happily handle the NTSC format.FLL wrote: Can't really help you much, British TV is quite technically different from US TV.

ConvertXtodvd is good as well. Google it. Can do all that was mentioned and even add subs custom menus with sound ect.

In a lot of cases they do.............it's also worth checking the usual subtitle sites as well.charlottegainsbourg1 wrote:wish when somebody puts a movie to avi on emule wishthey would. put the subs with it if availble.

It's really rather arrogant of us English speakers who make no attempt to learn other languages to expect EVERYTHING to have English subs! My understanding of French is good enough for most movies but apart from that, I'm as guilty & hopeless as most.
I don't think you can add subs to vob files. These need adding to the avi file as an external stream BEFORE transcoding.charlottegainsbourg1 wrote: no subs. i want to add them so i can burn it to dvd not watch online. i have the dvd in dvd files now vobs how do u add subs to this to burn?
Re: making a dvd from avi.
To decompress an AVI to a DVD again is just nonsense! Get a DVD player which can play Xvid an DivX (=avi format).
It will save you a lot of work and time
