PC Backup software question

Hello, very sure there are advanced people here.
I'm a Mac person, so I'm not too familiar with PC software.
I would like to ask people here for some advice. A friend of mine
ruined an external HDD with using NortonGhost.
I could help him to make the HDD usable again ( HDD lost the
drive letter and was inaccessible for that reason ).
He would need a nice backup software, as simple as possible.
He has definitely no IT qualifications, hit a button is what he
could do quite perfect.
Any help would be very welcome.
Thank you guys.

I like Acronis TrueImage.

The latest version is a little too complicated (has a lot of advanced features that are very good, but rather intimidating at first glance, besides being unnecessary for someone who just needs backup and restore functionality), so try an earlier version, e.g. v10.
Like this post to see ed2k links [100.13 MiB]
He should make whatever changes he needs to make to the HDD partitions BEFORE taking the backup - the only problem I ever had with Acronis was when I tried to restore a backup that had been made when the partitions were different.
