Have you listened to the lyrics? Its not about living for or dying for someone. Its about communication; whether they know how you feel about them. Its an ethic to live by, if you are fortunate enough to find someone you care about deeply.
Life insurance is based on similar reasoning. Why take out a life insurance policy - you'll be dead, won't you?
EDIT: YouTube abounds with versions that are NOT sung by Garth Brooks. Not saying he sang it absolutely perfectly, just that he sang it a whole lot better than anyone else I've heard so far. I think Ronan Keating has second best.

.......and a wonderful ethic too, & yes, I was fortunate enough to find somebody I cared about deeply. Turns out they simply wanted my money.......you know, much like life insurance!
