[REL] Baby Beauty Queens (2010) [UK]

To avoid confusion with last year's BBQ release & to stop the existing thread from getting ridiculously long I've made this a separate release. Of course, if admin feel this should be added to the original that's fine.
This is the first in a six-part series featuring the contestants as they prepare for & perform in the 2010 Mini-Miss UK pageant. I have to say having watched this I'm far from impressed..........maybe I'm just getting jaded having recently watched a lot of material featuring zero talent but I'm struggling to find much here either. This time, we get to meet Eden & Amber, a couple of the younger contestants as they shriek & cavort their way towards the competition. Neither displayed any attributes likely to further their career. I understand the pageant scene has exploded in the UK recently with 17 events now held nationally...........I'm optimistic that not all of them will be televised!.........I'll apologise in advance to those unfortunate enough to live there but the competition isn't helped by being staged in Milton Keynes, a faceless new town I have difficulty in viewing as anything other than a concrete shit-hole. Of course, in true British tradition the whole sorry exercise also stinks of being conducted with economy in mind. We really do know how to make ourselves look cheap on the world stage.
Never mind.......there's always the 'Yummy Mummy' part of the competition for those who prefer a more mature subject matter. Amber's mother, complete with letterbox mouth, seemed to consider herself winning to be a foregone conclusion.........God help us.

Episode 2 features Chloe, an 11-year-old from Northern Ireland, who, after having overcome weight related bullying problems at school is looking for success in her passion of 'Freestyle' dancing competitions. Thankfully, this is a UK phenomenom I'm unfamiliar with.......

Episode 2 now added to the original release. Sadly, I'm neither inspired nor entertained with this latest offering. This is fucking dire & makes me ashamed to be British but I'll carry on for the sake of completion. Strong Northern Irish accent throughout making it difficult to understand........possibly an advantage!

I can hardly blame anyone for the poor response to these........I made my feelings quite clear about the so-far absence of talent & noticably cheap programming.
Next week's offering does look more encouraging.........

Spoiler: 23-year-old model Lucie Brassington is running her own beauty pageant, Miss Mini Photogenic. From the age of six, girls have entered via the internet to try their hand at becoming the new face of this prestigious title. For most of the little girls who are competing it will be their first time walking down a catwalk, and for Lucie it's the first time she has ever run a pageant. Ten-year-old Megan from Birmingham is one of six children, but is the only one who has ever wanted to perform on the stage. For the family it's a big investment and Megan has had to do her fair share of fundraising. After asking her neighbours and local shops if they would like to sponsor her, she has one last attempt at raising the money she needs. Although she has never taken part in a beauty competition, 11-year-old Telka is an accomplished and talented actor who has appeared in a major TV series and is the voice behind a children's cartoon character. Her mum was a successful child model in Iran and now Telka is trying to follow in her footsteps. For nine-year-old Karagh, it is not only her first pageant but also the first time she gets to stay in a hotel. Her 14-year-old auntie Kerry entered Karagh into the competition and although she thinks she has a good chance of winning, she's nervous about her gappy and wobbly teeth. But Kerry comes to the rescue and finds a beauty pageant secret that will cover up the gaps by coating Karagh's teeth in Vaseline. On the day of the pageant, 26 grand finalist girls compete for this new title at Epsom Racecourse. It's a tense day for all of them, especially when some of the judges come down with swine flu, and Lucie and her mum go on a frantic search for a final judge with minutes to spare

......& Epsom Racecourse is a bit more up-market than Milton Keynes!
We shall see.........

This is a vast improvement over the previous episodes, partly because of a greater variety of contestants but more likely because the girls are actually dressed up to look their best, rather than appearing as mini-witches in warpaint. Still done 'on the cheap' though........check the bemused venue security guy literally dragged off the street to be a judge because they were one missing!

Spoiler: 13-year-old Sophie Watson has won more beauty pageants than any other teenager in Britain. Spoiler: Unlike most boys his age, eight-year-old Matthew isn't interested in football or computer games. Instead, Matthew is obsessed with fashion and shopping and, more than anything else in the world, he wants to be a model. Matthew much prefers the company of girls and his favorite hobby, much to his older brothers' dismay, is performing elaborate catwalk shows on the dining room table with his best friend, Marni. Matthew's parents Lee and Ross feel that since they support his brothers' interests in music and football, they must do the same for Matthew's less conventional passions and so they sign him up with a child model agency. Of course, the child model industry turns out to be very different from the fantasy catwalks of Matthew's imagination.

FLM is not gender specific so I make no apology for this week's episode concentrating on a boy. Anyway, after a couple of crates of Stella I think he looks quite cute!

This features 8-year-old Liane, who, with the assistance of a fairly deranged & obnoxious mother, is intent on becoming a model despite lacking any natural beauty or talent.
This series has been a major disappointment & has demonstrated, irrespective of your views concerning child manipulation/exploitation, we have the ability to take something America is rather good at & fuck it up. This is cheap & nasty television with subject matter that can be bettered at my local Tesco.
.......& I haven't even mentioned 'Underage & Pregnant' that has been broadcast prior to BBQ for the last six weeks that I've felt obliged to watch. Those who consider there is no such thing as an ugly child may care to watch this series & revise their opinion.
I put it all down to poor breeding stock.........
