Airlines have gotten more predatory and generally unfair in the last few years, rationalizing that the losses due to fuel costs justifies it.
A previous job had extensive travel, I am a "million miler" on one airline and have accumulated enough miles for free tickets on three others. I learned enough to not get too upset at some things which are inevitable or unavoidable, but also to know how to anticipate and avoid many bad things. Knowledge of how things work is key. For example, what the airline customer service people tell you depends a lot on how you ask the questions and may be wrong.
The airline industry eats occasional and leisure travellers alive.
