This is based on a story by David Gerrold, the science fiction author. Amongst others, he wrote The Man Who Folded Himself (1973, and that book becomes a whole lot more clear, if you know some key elements about Gerrolds background.

In that book, the protagonist gets a time-travel belt from his uncle, and when he uses it, he meets other versions of himself.....A LOT of versions.....
