This is based on a story by David Gerrold, the science fiction author. Amongst others, he wrote The Man Who Folded Himself (1973, and that book becomes a whole lot more clear, if you know some key elements about Gerrolds background.

The Martian Child is a semi-autobiographical novel, expanded from a novelette of the same name, based on the author's own experiences as a single adoptive father, with most of the key moments drawn from actual events. The novelette won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, and a movie version was released in November 2007, with John Cusack playing the adoptive father. I saw it years ago and really enjoyed it. I guess I thought it was already here and never really took time to look. I guess I should have...

A quiet, yet heart-rending little story. I'm a John Cusack fan and REALLY thought he did a great job in this film. The little boy, Bobby Coleman, who plays Dennis will tug at your heartstrings...

In that book, the protagonist gets a time-travel belt from his uncle, and when he uses it, he meets other versions of himself.....A LOT of versions..... And what do healthy young men do when they are together in a relaxed atmosphere? Exactly.....
