[REL] Emil i Lönneberga [TV series 1974-1976]

The series tells stories from the childhood of a sometimes naughty, but very lovable and kindhearted young boy growing up on a farm in southern Sweden in the early 20th century.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0201380/

13-episode TV series edited from the 3 Emil movies (1971-1973) with 25 minutes of additional footage. The stories focus on the misadventures of the BOY Emil, but his adorable little sister Ida gets significant screen time. Beloved character actor Allan Edwall (veteran of many Astrid Lindgren adaptations) is hilarious as Emil's frequently exasperated father. I find the Emil stories to be the absolutely funniest of all of Lindgren's stories!

Some episodes have been released here:
https://www.first-loves.com/forums/view ... =23&t=3922
It looks like they may be the German dubbed version.

svtplay is gradually releasing the Swedish version (for a limited time) one episode per week through the end of January. I plan on keeping up with their schedule and releasing them here. Available with Swedish IPs and VPNs:

The English subtitles are edited from multiple sources. First, a machine-translation of the original Swedish subtitles. This translation I compared and combined with the English (and Norwegian in parts) re-edited and re-timed from the English movie subtitles by user ferdi111. For the video, I blurred out the svt logo. Here are the first 3 episodes:

1080p Swedish language with optional English and optional original Swedish subtitles:

13 part TV+series are available at tv.nrk.no. as well if you can get rid of geoblocking.
Although they have it as 720p.
I took English subs from three Emil movies and pasted English phrases to the right places.
The result was English-Norwegian mix what I sent to Night457.

Translating Astrid Lindgren scripts is always a fun challenge, because like any other great author she invents her own words and uses terms that were archaic even in her time. For example, throughout every episode anyone exasperated with Emil (usually his father) will exclaim:
Förgrymmade unge!
This is generally understood to mean something like 'Darned kid!' or 'Rotten child!' This term apparently is just not used outside of the Emil stories and referents to them. Maybe Swedish children are just better behaved these days?

Alternate spelling on an amusing video compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEqmjxAOn6U Note: Allan Edwall sounds much harsher there than in context. His character is actually rather gentle and tolerant, but Emil pushes him to his very limits! It is hilarious seeing Emil's papa suffer, because you can really feel for him.

The local people call Emil an "illbatting": 'brat', 'rascal', 'naughty boy.'

And frequently we hear "Hujedamej" both in the song and in dialog: 'Good grief', 'Oh Lordy', 'God save me'.

ferdi111 has repeatedly been a huge help when I have tackled Lindgren translation projects. I am quite certain that I would never have re-edited the English movie subtitles to match the series because that would be A LOT of work. But since he did the work already and reached out to me after I mentioned Emil in an earlier thread, I was happy to make use of it!! Machine translations have improved tremendously and frequently make perfectly good English, but still in many cases the meaning is obscure. Having those parts already professionally translated saved a lot of time, because a literal translation sometimes just does not express the right intent.

ANYWAY, as some folks will choose to download episodes directly from svtplay or nrk.no and have problems with eMule, here are the English and Swedish subtitles for the first 3 episodes direct:

Strictly for Lindgren obsessives like ferdi111 and myself:

I have gone back to my previous posts and replaced the English subtitles with new and improved, updated versions. The changes are minor. The videos and the Swedish subtitles are the same.

Anyone who has the old versions of the English subtitles already in their eMule queue will still be able to download them, because I am still sharing those also.

Episode 05 of the Swedish series. (Same as Episode 13 of the Norwegian run.)
A sentimental Christmas story with a werewolf.

I must praise director Olle Hellbom, who was a genius at working with children. Even when his cast was too young to handle much dialog (like sister Ida), the reaction shots he got were priceless.

Subtitles for those who direct-download the video:
Emil 05 En-Sw.zip
(Note: if you get the video from NRK, I think it is 2 seconds later in the timing on this episode.)
