Komissar AKA The Commissar (1967)

A female commander in the Russian army winds up pregnant and is then sent to live with Jewish family of eight. As the birth of her son approaches, the woman develops a fondness for children and motherly concern for the one she is soon to call her own, but has her ideological training about "class consciousness" formed too much of an impression, perhaps one intense enough for her to sacrifice her child?

An exceptional film which probably has one of the longest and most unique birth scenes to be found on celluloid..., as well as interesting commentary on the human condition and some impressive camera-work. Banned in the former USSR for 21 years; based on Vassily Grossman's story "In The Town of Berdichev"; mostly filmed in 1968 but not completed until 1988.

The children of the Jewish family (Luba Katz, Pavlik Levin, Dina Kleiman), roughly four to six years of age, have secondary yet significant roles, including a highly realistic scene of play about how Jews are often cruelly treated. Highly recommended!
Doesn't sound like my kind of movie, but it's posted at CVMC so here is the url ;)
