http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089908/

IMDB lists this as UK/USA so I've gone for the first option

I have seen this many years ago. Fairuza Balk is terrific in this. :thumbsup Sadly, all downhill for her after that. IMO she didn't age well. :(

I've never seen this one, but I read that unlike the 1939 movie it is a darker fantasy with no singing and dancing. That sounds like it is right up my alley. Thanks!

My brother told me about this movie growing up. He said he couldn't remember if he dreamt it or it was a real movie. I remember thinking at the time "there's no wizard of oz 2!" Of course the reality is it exists in a grey area between a sequel and more faithful adaptation of the books. I am sure they were perfectly fine to leave it ambiguous to the audience.

Anyway, I did finally see this either in my late teens or early 20s and I've owned a copy ever since. Faruza is great in it! And it has the 80s creepy weirdness movies from the period had : Neverending story, labyrinth, and especially the czech alice in wonderland film that borders on horror.

I honestly think this movie also leans pretty close to horror themes at times, at least by today's standards. It still feels like a children's film but it has some...heavy moments. Particulary Queen Mambi, which I won't spoil, but...geez. def some nightmare fuel for kids.

(And the stuff in the hospital at the start of the film. I dont think kids would fully grasp what is happening, but quite bleak stuff.)

Sadly, this film does seem forgotten outside of a cult following. I never see it mentioned along side those other 80s films, and while its not perfect, maybe even a little too weird for its own good, its def got a special place in my heart!

Hospital scene if anyone is curious: https://youtu.be/6EXoqJKE6Eg?si=Vz6DJXLDOLugqxUV

I admit that the "80s creepy weirdness movies" scared me away at the time, but I eventually I caught up with them and now enjoy them very much and give them repeat viewings. That definitely makes me even more intrigued about this one, thanks!

Enjoyed reading about your experience with this one, marvingray.

I had the great experience of having watched when I was a kid, and I can tell you, this movie left quite the impression on me at that susceptible time. I still remember how scary it was back then! I wish I could reexperience these movies like that again.

No spoilers:
I still remember how freaky it felt when wheelers first appeared and chased the group. They captured too well the distrust of the experimental hospital and the terror of the procedure (that one rang close to me at the time). And the building fear when they slowly first approached Mombi in her grand palace. I will not spoil the initial outcome, either.

This movie for a kid back then was fantastic and wonderful and terrifying. That clip of the hospital scene might not catch all the dread of the situation, as they built up some level of apprehension to the type of facility it was much earlier.

Gotta rewatch this one, myself! I remember rewatching it several years ago, and the experience was just as fun. I still remember how exciting when Mr. Tiktok came alive and kicked ass, as exciting as any kung fu fight scene. It's recommended by my younger self, Night. Not sure how much it would engage me now, though I would still enjoy it again.
