Suzuhara Nao (Yasuko Matsuyuki) becomes a teacher at an elementary school.
She's in charge of of first-year students and doesn't have much passion for her
job. One of her young students named Reina becomes attached to her new teacher.
One day, Nao notices bruises on Reina and realizes that she is the victim of child abuse.
At first Nao doesn't say anything, but Nao notices more bruises with each passing day
and Reina's absences from school become more frequent. As a mother, Nao's maternal
instincts kicks in and she decides to take of Reina. Nao & Reina then takes a train from
their native Hokkaido to Tokyo ...

I had to delete most of my off-topic post because it was easier than editing out the wrong, misremembered details once I figured it out. This drama's storyline reminded me of a Korean movie no doubt partly inspired by it, "Miss Baek" (2018):

It seems there is an untold wealth of Japanese material that would be great for FLM. Apparently, much of it TV dramas. If Ie Naki Ko's TV series history is correct, even the popular dramas from as early back as the mid 90s don't have DVD or digital releases!

Spoiler: It was a movie and not a series, Korean and not Japanese, probably other stuff too. What I DID remember right: it was good, and I liked it. I really gave too many spoilers in what I wrote anyway, so it is best if it fades from your memory, and you just watch the movie if it appeals to you.

Oh yeah ... this "Mother" series was remade in a Korean version and also a Thai version.

Thanks again for the recommendation. Both this series and the Miss Baek movie looks pretty good.

You wanted to discover how I was wrong, that's just weird! ... And a neverending source of discovery, these days ... Problem is, I HAVE been drinking extra coffee and it ain't working. I am waiting for the proper meds to kick in. With either a headache or lots of coffee, that KEEPS me from sleeping it off! The two together is even worse, so posting on FLM makes for a good distraction. So much for that "extra hour" of sleep tonight!
