A young girl comes of age in a household that's a maelstrom of corruption and violence in this period drama from director Beatriz Flores Silva. Aurelio Saravia (Hector Guido) is a powerful politician who holds office in Uruguay in the mid-1960's. When Aurelio's mistress kills herself, he adopts their illegitimate daughter Masangeles (Antonella Aquistapache) despite the stern objections of his wife Aurora (Margarita Musto).

Masangeles finds herself growing up in a home ruled by a corrupt and self-centered tyrant and his manic colleagues while Uruguay teeters on the brink of civil war as bands of revolutionaries battle government militias. When she turns fourteen, Masangeles (now played by Elisa Garcia) discovers a secret passageway in their home that leads to sanctuary in a nearby church which also serves as a storehouse for guns and ill-gotten cash.

Teenage Masangeles falls in love with Santiago (Nicolas Furtado), her stepbrother who has joined the rebels fighting against the state, and she persuades him to take her virginity. Before long, Santiago is on the run from his father's forces while Masangeles discovers she's going to have his child; when an ambush against Santiago and his comrades sets the house on fire, she's forced to take shelter in the secret passage.

This was an unusual movie but I liked it because it was both funny and a little horrifying - there were a lot of excesses by the politicians, and there was a lot of repression by the military when the common people rose up against it. Both Antonella Aquistapache (Masángeles at 7) and Elisa García (at 14) are beautiful (brief OT only in the later years) and their acting was good, as were the rest of the characters.

The 'family' is kind of bizarre, with the politician father having pistol and fencing duels with political rivals, the stepmother continually bankrupting the family by remodeling the mansion, unaware of the poverty of the common people, and her stepbrother and friends becoming ardent revolutionaries and being brutally repressed by the military. At one point, they interrupt a family dinner pointing guns at everyone, but when the stepmother chastises them, they agree to leave, even asking nicely where they can paint their slogans without damaging her house. The ending felt to me like they weren't sure how to tie up the loose ends so they picked a cliche. Even so, not your average run-of-the-mill film.

Thanks popdrome and starfish.

Received the movie, subs English+French are at opensubtitles
From the first sight... movie is weird. Hot emotions guns and women - it is probably normal for that region but...
those brother and sister both had something wrong in their heads
From girls side - was it really so hard to find a boar with big gun and from brothers side - why didn't he search for a lady who wants so much that she needs more than one to fulfill her appetite?

That sister was probably first woman brother saw in his life because he was so confused when...
