Two little girls hide in the boys' bathroom at school so they can find out what happens there. When two boys come in, the four gradually talk each other into taking off their clothes. The principal catches them, and angrily berates them for what they've been up to, warning them that he'll have to tell their parents about the incident. Later repercussions are seen as parents of three of them separately discuss and fight about what has happened, with some taking a winking attitude of their child's discovery and others battling about how to react. Returning to school poses an additional challenge, as everyone has found out what has gone on.

Note, IMDB lists it as 1976 with a Release of December 1976, even though the handwritten video credits itself postdates it to 1977. Maybe that Los Angeles release was an unexpected preview. IMDB also calls it a "Short" but by our definition it is a Feature Film at over 40 minutes.

All of the film's original materials were destroyed in a fire at Dyan Cannon's home in the mid-2000s; all that survives is a video transfer of the film.

I found this sometimes hilarious because of the neurotic and buffoonish adults. The enraged and screaming principal had me in fits! Other times, it was very sad because of the parents who inflicted their obsessions on the children and made them miserable.

The screenshots clearly show the limited resolution of the black & white videotape. I cropped off the worst of the tracking issues at the top and bottom, but some still remains because I did not want to crop too much. The audio is similarly rough and sometimes hard to understand, but I took a Whisper-generated English subtitle and edited and corrected it to make it as complete and correct as possible. There are some parts that I just could NOT understand, so there are places with just "." or "..."

Spoiler: This is a slightly more complete version of the subtitle file, with some unlikely guesses and ??? as a marker in the places where I have serious questions about the text: Number One (1976).480p.VHSripRecode.ENGLISH.WebOKru.WITH-QUESTIONS.srt I left the ??? out of the other subtitle file because it is very annoying to read! It is really only to focus attention on the problems. The audio can be VERY hard to decipher. If I get enough corrections or additions posted here or Private Messaged to me then I will post a revised subtitle.

Did you generate the whisper file yourself? I'll give this a watch tomorrow evening and see if I have any suggestions.

I just HAD to make English subtitles because I knew that most potential viewers would find it incomprehensible without them. The children essentially played themselves while the adults were professional actors, some more professional than others. The principal was played by Allen Garfield, a fine actor, and I was grateful that he spoke loud and clear so that his dialog was always audible. ENUNCIATE! He did that, while others whined and mumbled. Still, the problem was primarily the audio recording quality.

The Larger model of Purfview's SLOWER Whisper in SubtitleEdit had already run for over 8 hours on this 45 minute film and would not finish, so I canceled it and switched to the Medium model. I think that one actually finished within 4 hours. I was surprised at how WELL it correctly deciphered difficult parts, while completely skipping over multi-minute blocks of dialog that was easy to understand! It is fortunate that I LIKED this so much, because it did indeed take hours of editing in multiple sessions spread across this past week to fix the mistakes and add in most of the missing parts. Some dialog snippets I put on a loop and listened to dozens of times in succession. If anyone here might be interested in giving difficult audio another listen, pillowbaker is the first I would think of. Just don't get too optimistic about this one though. I am sure that some of it will NEVER be deciphered!

It's called FASTER Whipser because it is really a lot faster than the regular Whisper from Open AI. I just tried it for myself with the large model and SE was done in 3 minutes with my RTX 4090.

I guess you don't have a fast graphic card in your machine? But 8 hours is far too long.
