Storyline:
Ai was a brilliant and attractive high school student, but when her father abandons the family her mother becomes alcoholic and ceases to care for her. Her grades fall as she becomes increasingly lonely. During a school field trip she leaves her hotel to wander in the city. As night falls she takes a taxi only to be taken to the countryside. Bo a lonely Chinese taxi driver has decided in desperation of his own loneliness to kidnap her. He keeps her confined in a room for many days without mistreating her or abusing her. He cuddles at night to sleep next to her. Slowly Ai begins to realize that he is just as lonely as she is. The day he leaves the door unchained, instead of running away, she realizes that this is her new home. Eventually she is found and returned to Mr Hashimoto, her teacher, so he can take her back to her mother. The teacher realizes Ai has found happiness.

Kano Ito (Ai) was born in 1984 according to IMDb ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1824931/) so she was 18 when this film was released. I'm moving this to Verified Off Topic until/unless someone can say it's FLM material.

Was she 18 when the movie was released? Her DOB is July 28th, 1984. You're saying the movie was created and released within 5 months after her 18th birthday in 2002. Not very likely.

Amadeus, we consider the age cut off limit here to be 16 depending on context of the character portrayed. After viewing the movie myself she doesn't appear to be younger than 18 regardless if she is or not. This site is about children/childhood, not adulthood nor a technicality of actual age. Tracy Lords is the example best used around here. No one on the planet thought she was underage because nothing about her indicated she was, in fact everything about here indicated she was older. 'Context' is important here. This movie is off-topic. ;)

Yeah, under age is <16. 18 is already a granny.

She was 18 when it was released, probably 17 when it was filmed, so she was too old even by that criteria. That alone wouldn't make this off-topic, but this girl doesn't look - or behave - like a child.

This film didn't interest me precisely because she was at the very top end of the "childhood" scale. It's a stretch for me to consider a 16-year-old a 'child' any more (just talk to one sometime :)), but we have to have a cutoff point somewhere.
