The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a children's novel by Joan Aiken, first published in 1962. Set in an alternate history of England, it tells of the adventures of cousins Bonnie and Sylvia and their friend Simon the goose-boy as they thwart the evil schemes of their governess Miss Slighcarp.
The novel is the first in the Wolves Chronicles, a series of books set during the fictional 19th century reign of King James III. A large number of wolves have migrated from the bitter cold of Europe and Russia into Britain via the Channel Tunnel, and terrorize the inhabitants in their continuing hunting. Aiken wrote the book over a period of years, with a seven-year gap due to her full-time work; the success of this, her second novel, enabled her to quit her job and write full-time.
It is described by John Rowe Townsend as "a tale of double-dyed villainy, with right triumphant in the end.

I had an old DVD of this. Annoyingly the film is widescreen 1.85:1 for the opening credits, then switches to 1.3:1 (4:3 TV) ratio. I cropped about 12 pixels off the top and bottom so it's about 1.35:1.
If anyone has this in a country where it's been released in widescreen I'd much prefer to see it in that format. I'm sure it's cropped in at the sides and not open-matte.

The end credits note the film was filmed in the Czechoslovakia - presumably for the guaranteed snow, or some tax reason.

Forgot to mention that despite being shot in Czechoslovakia, it seems the film is an English production with an English speaking cast. No subtitles.
The darker haired girl has a Czech name in the credits but speaks english perfectly.
If it helps spark interest, the 2 girls are in >90% of the film.
