The tree we hurt is the first full-length movie by the greek director Dimos Avdeliodis.
Avdeliodis was born in Chios, an island in the north Aegean, in 1952.
This is where he returns, to create 'The tree we hurt'
Literary the title refers to the proccess of obtaining mastic from the mastic tree which as a resin is produced in droplets or "tears".
The movie consists of several episodes loosely connected, depicting the various adventures and misadventures of a boy and his friends during their summer vacations from school in 1960. Using that as a canvas, Avdeliodis gives us a glimpse into the everyday life of the villagers as well as an insight into the boy's thoughts and feelings. It is a low-budget film, making the various technical imperfections more obvious and most of the actors are non-professionals (Avdeliodis's son has the main role of the boy-narrator while Avdeliodis himself plays a small role as the local lunatic) and that works fine for the movie as it enhances its authenticity. It is a direct and absolute view on life as close as possible to a child's view of the outside world done with a childlike simplicity and innocence.
Avdeliodis has managed to create a deeply personal movie, thus making it more easily accessible.
