A poor farmer is looking for a godfather for his 13th child Jörg. He declined the offers of God and Satan and chooses Death as his son's godfather. He sends his son to the Universities of Perigia and Casablanca to study medicine where he will become a famous and wealthy city Medicus. Jörg's godfather, Death, gives him the power to cure anyone who has the deathmark on his head but not on his feet. In a plague, he saves the mayor's life by tricking Death who warns him not to try it again. Jörg is in love with the mayor's daughter, and when she falls ill with the plague, Jörg must make a difficult decision.

This is another DEFA film. FYI - the story line is good but the childrens' roles are minor and almost don't qualify the film to be on-topic. If anyone objects, I'll move this to Verified Off-Topic.
