Screenshots from .avi/.mpg files

Post by Rich »   0 likes

The key to obtaining screenshots is to disable 'overlay video output' so that the print screen function works.

There are two pieces of software well suited to this;

1. VLC Media Player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

settings->preferences->advanced options(check box)->video->overlay video output(uncheck box)

2. Vidomi Enhanced AVI Player http://vidomi.com/

right click->options->player options->output device(change from 'force overlay' to 'force gdi'->click OK

Hope this is useful,

Rich :)

You can also use PowerDVD, since it has a snapshot feature which works for any played video source.

You can also do TGA frame SnapShots with Vdub.

Just hit "shift+1". (best used on keyframes)

You will have to use somthing else to convert from TGA to jpg. I use PhotoShop.

Frame SnapShots are decompressed AVI frames. So they are pretty much the best Q way of getting screen caps. But slower than say PowerDVD. Also keep in mind PowerDVD stores them as ".bmp" and are not very HQ.

Thanks for the info mufc

Tell me, does gom player save the shots as .jpegs or that really annoying .png file

I’m bored with having to convert png to jpeg after every time I use VLC to make screen shots, plus the trail period for the conversion software that im using ran out yesterday and I cant find a key generator for it :)

So a player that makes instant jpegs from screenshots is what im looking for.

I use VLC for screen shots and didn't even realize it did .pngs, all my screenshots come out as vlcsnap-xxxxx.jpg.

Looking further, I see that under Preferences->Video (General video settings) there is an option to choose which format it writes for snapshots, png or jpg.
