When six-year-old Sophie is tragically orphaned guardianship is assigned to her estranged aunt Annabelle. The two move into a large, eerie, Victorian house where Sophie unearths a locked wooden box with a strange symbol drawn on it. Desperate to connect with her niece Annabelle pries the lock open revealing a beautiful music box. Each time the music box is wound and replayed it's surprisingly chilling melody plays slightly longer, captivating Sophie even more. When the music box begins affecting Sophie's behavior and health Annabelle seeks the aid of a child psychologist and clairvoyant who soon discover the music box is possessed by an evil spirit who seeks to haunt Sophie and destroy Annabelle. As the haunting intensifies time begins to run out and Annabelle finds herself racing against the music box's melody to defeat the spirit before the last note plays.

Is this one of those possession movies where the little girl becomes possessed?

The little girl she plays in this film (Sophie) isn't possessed in the traditional sense (as in The Exorcist), but rather undergoes a progressive supernatural conditioning. After finding the music box, Sophie becomes obsessed with it. The melody, which grows longer with each listen, captures her mind, causing her to behave strangely and disturbingly. The music box houses the evil spirit of a little girl who died under mysterious circumstances. This spirit begins to manifest itself to Sophie (who initially mistakes it for an imaginary friend) with the goal of "stealing" her life force or replacing her. As the bond with the object strengthens, Sophie's health visibly deteriorates, a sign that the spirit is consuming her. This film essentially stages a deadly spell that aims to destroy the little girl from within through the music box's music.
