[REL] The Kid from the Big Apple Part 1 and 2 (2016 & 2017) [Malaysia]

These movies are well worth the watch. I have only watched part of the first movie.
I decided to put the links to both on one page instead of making separate entries for each one. Hard coded English subs on both.

Sarah raised in New York visits Malaysia for the first time and learns why her grandfather, Gen and mother, Sophia have not seen each other since she was born and why they care so much about their cultural traditions.

"I'm so worried that you will forget about me, Grandpa!"
In the first movie, grandpa Master Lin (Ti Lung) has to put up with his westernized granddaughter Sarah (Tan Qin Lin) from New York who came to live with him in Malaysia. However, they managed to bond and even developed a beautiful relationship during that short period spent together. In this sequel, Lin has decided to retire fully and stop practicing in his traditional Chinese medical clinic, while Sarah and her mother Sophia (Debbie Goh) are coming back to visit him in his new condominium. Unfortunately, a dark cloud now hangs over their happy reunion because grandpa Lin is suffering from dementia and it's getting worse as each day passes.

Ti Lung?!?!???? THE Ti Lung????? Yes!!!! I love that guy. And I just watched "A Better Tomorrow" for the umpteenth time a week or so ago.

Thank you very much!! I am pleased to see that he is doing sentimental family dramas, because after putting in his time with the martial arts flicks (love those too) he proved in later decades to be a fine dramatic actor. I am looking forward to these!

A Chinese / Hong Kong actor who was one of the stable of Chang Cheh's martial arts stars in 1970s Shaw Brothers films like "The Water Margin", "Five Shaolin Masters" and "All Men Are Brothers". They were all about manly men sweating, bleeding, and dying together in the bonds of brotherly love while fighting their implacable foes. He had a mid-career boost in 1986 as a former gangster in "A Better Tomorrow" by director John Woo, whose films were all about sensitive manly men sweating, bleeding, and dying ... etc.

Of course if you are not a Hong Kong movie geek then none of those names mean anything to you!

I am hoping to start watching these today. I nosed around and discovered petra's streaming source for the first movie, currently available WITHOUT having to sign up for the CCTV6 YouTube channel membership:

No, I never liked those movies. Even when I was a kid.

Direct-download links at the bottom.

Some minor SPOILERS in my very positive reaction below! I know many people don't want to know anything going into a film, but the second one in particular is really on my mind.

Short version: first movie good, second one great!
Spoiler:

Wow. The first movie was very amusing with the focus on the spoiled tween New York granddaughter Sarah learning to appreciate her more traditional grandfather. There is able support from the new friends she makes in Malaysia, particularly the comical boy-next-door Bao. I readily found myself in sympathy with the anti-modern attitudes of her grandfather, known to the neighborhood as Master Lin. I despise social media too. It was a fun movie.

But the second movie was phenomenal and hit me hard. It was more serious with its attention on the developing dementia hitting grandfather. The young teens Sarah and Bao are now mainly prominent supporting players here. Both are more mature and responsible, with Bao unwisely taking the weight of the world on his shoulders and keeping grandfather's dementia a secret, while also helping and watching out for him. He is even more desperately in love with Sarah and determined to become Master Lin's grandson-in-law in the future. Hopefully he can manage a DATE with Sarah first. I would certainly like to see them hook up!

Without being painfully depressing, the movie keeps it real in depicting dementia and does not offer any easy answers or solutions. Grandfather WILL get worse day by day and he will forget his loved ones. It is not-so-simply a matter of keeping his mind engaged as long as possible while surrounding him with the love and care he needs. I agree with his rejection of the money-machine scam that is often a part of "advanced" U.S. medicine, offering mostly false hope for profit. Sorry, I don't want to scare anyone off if they are reading this pre-watch. This is a beautiful film and it had quite a personal impact on me.

I would say the one misstep in believability is grandfather working to get his successful businesswoman daughter Shu Xian BACK together with her ex-husband, who abandoned her in New York before Sarah was born. I am all in favor in forgiving people for their past mistakes, but I totally do NOT believe in going backwards in relationships! Surely if she wants one she can find some other guy who is good for her, and also a good father for her daughter. Her view is that men are unnecessary and I think in her case I might agree with her.
I made a number of spelling and transcription corrections to the English subtitle for the second movie:
The.Kid.From.The.Big.Apple.Before.We.Forget.2017.1080p.BluRay.x264.AAC5.1-[YTS.MX].en.srt
|
Due to hardware limitations, it turns out my blu-ray player will NOT play 96kHz AAC audio. I converted the soundtrack to standard 48kHz AAC.5.1 and kept the video the same. If you have the same problem or you just can not eMule, here is the new video and the subtitles uploaded to ulozto:

Thank you again petra!

I watched both movies. For me it was the other way round:

Part 1: Funny and fresh. More screen time for Sarah and her friends.
Part 2: Much too sentimental and with too much tears.

But that's only my personal opinion and of course tastes are different.

I have part 1 in slightly better picture qulaity:

I can definitely appreciate your own preference. Here's why:

(SPOILERed yet another of my rants...)
Spoiler:

Absolutely the first one has more of the children, which is a huge consideration especially at FLM! I missed them in the second but was not sure I could have handled it if it was 2.5 hours long just to get more screentime for them. They had grown in maturity and were just a bit too "perfect" in the second: Sarah had been very funny as a BRAT! Then she turned into an unrelentingly cooperative, empathetic and responsible young lady. Those people are good to have in your life (to take advantage of them) but a little dull to watch in a movie. Grandfather at least remained a little prickly, and his dementia made him difficult to deal with. (Although that was toned down considerably from how it CAN be in real life.) Just imagine the potential horror of a combination of both films in one: an impossibly selfish and inconsiderate brat being forced to deal with an old man slipping into dementia. Oh my.

Oddly enough, I thought the FIRST one was too sentimental and teary, I am not sure why. Although I did appreciate that it left Sarah's father as someone who is just NOT involved in her life, and that she was NOT especially in misery because of it. I consider that true to life. (Although having a good male role model in her grandfather was certainly necessary for her.) I get irritated with movies where a child is longing for a parent they NEVER KNEW. Suck it up, get over it and move on. An accidental meeting of goo and egg is nothing to get emotional about. Lots of parents are garbage and you are likely better off not having been damaged by their presence. The second movie had Absent Dad as a misunderstood Nice Guy. I like Redemption stories too, but he could do that on his own without butting into the life of a child he never knew, 13 years too late. Nyah. The Redemption / Relationship Renewal arc of the FIRST movie at least had a father who had already put in the time raising his daughter. They just had a falling out when she fell for the Wrong Guy. That is fixable.
Soooo ... I am glad you have this upgrade for the first, because I DO want to watch it again!
