Thank you! I had recently watched a Delon film before he died and have watched another since, so he was on my mind. It is good that I can watch one that is FLM-worthy as well.

. The French text subtitle DOES still have some errors because I did not want to spend too much time on just that and I am definitely not qualified to correct French anyway. My purpose was mainly to use it for translation. The English version I combed carefully to TRY to make it as correct as possible. Keep in mind that I do NOT pretend to know French!

It was a struggle at first just to pick the best OCR method, Image palette & French dictionary option to get the most accurate OCR from the DVDsubs. Then I made the mistake of allowing SubtitleEdit to supply missing accents on vowels: the problem being that many had multiple options, and I only guessed the first option which usually turned out to be the version least likely to be used. I should have just left them entirely unaccented like the DVDsubs! (Being almost entirely ignorant of French, I came to discover the completely different meanings of étés, etes / mémé, même. Don't laugh! )
I still have not progressed to AI. After the initial Google-engine translation and viewing the movie with that, I went back and manually corrected every line with the help of Tr-Ex.me & DeepL, as well as referring back to the actual DVDsubs when the occasional OCR-errors made a strange translation. I also manually adjusted the line sync as necessary. Character name spellings are from the movie credits and NOT from IMDB. Cultural terms are the current English spelling. For purposes of a fuller translation I added the few French words I could recognize (and spell) that were NOT in the French subtitle file. (I at least know "s'il vous plaît".) My own additions to the SDH portion of the English subtitles were my own best interpretation based on what I heard. With the translation corrected, I watched it again! I also generated a non-SDH English version.
I really enjoyed this, thanks! I went on to research the Maasai (Masai) both in the mid-20th century (the time period of the movie) as well as now. This because I wanted to know what a "Moran" was. WOW thanks for the edited-by-hand version of the subs, Night. I think a human edited text-- with google, deepL, and this new tr-ex.me site-- will likely surpass an initial AI translation.
I was uncertain about giving this movie a try, since I don't always jive with animal movies. But learning about Alain Delon and seeing the work you put in, I gotta give it a try.
I hope that even people who don't have an interest in M. Delon will watch it! I don't like animal movies much either but that is mostly because of dogs, kitties and horsies. Lions are COOL. They did have to do process shots / green screen for safety reasons I am sure, because Mlle Delon did not ACTUALLY raise it from a cub and was not its best pal. She IS damn cute and quite watchable, even outside of her lion scenes.
Tr-ex.me I think is an old site. (EDIT: "Domain creation date: 02/19/2018.") I used it quite a bit with Swedish. I have to do translations the old-fashioned way because I got frustrated at my multiple failed attemps at AI. This one I liked enough that I felt it worth my time to improve the still-serviceable first pass.
The German actor Heino Ferch, who plays Julien Keller, looks a bit like Bruce Willis, and surprisingly, he is dubbed by Patrick Poivey, the official and cult voice of Bruce Willis in all these films in France from 1988 until 2020, the year of his death.

Now that you mention it, I can easily "hear" Patrick Poivey as a very good choice for a French Bruce Willis. I vaguely wondered if Heino was dubbed when I watched the movie just a bit ago but I was focused more on subtitle reading than lip-reading. It turns out I have seen Heino in a handful of movie roles too, but the one character that I actually remember is gang leader Ronnie in Lola rennt (Run Lola Run).
Apropos of nothing in particular, Ornella Muti who played the mother will always be Princess Aura from Flash Gordon in my mind.
