ping old newsgroup friends

I am doing my every few years pop in. Since I had to let LMA go I could not login with my normal account, so if you remember far enough back, this was my original name. I could very easily prove myself to popdrome :)

I had a little health thing and I'm feeling very nostalgic and trying to recover some very old, and probably very lost clips from decades ago from the usenet days. Surprisingly I just found that eweka has retention going back to 2008, its not everything but there was a lot in LMA, I was able to find a lot of my old rips and a bunch of other stuff that got shared there. But there was another group or two that I have completely forgotten the name of. It's where mostly music clips, tv eps, and cute commercials got posted, things like JESC, MGPjr, American Juniors, posters like moorvis, adie and popdrone under his old name ;) Does anyone remember what those groups were?

This is very long shot, but if anyone was a digital horder like me and kept posts from those groups and has a way to share them. I would dig thru terabytes to try and find some of the old clips I have lost.

Hello forum old timer. I am still relatively new around here. I would enjoy hearing stories of FLM long past, if you have the time. Also, do you have other connections to popdrome? He hasn't been around in a while, maybe you could check on him.

May I ask what LMA is?

I regrettably cannot help with anything usenet related. If you want some more cute commercials, I know of a few newer ones I can share. I haven't even shared them HERE yet!

Good luck with your health situation.

Hi, not sure I have too many stories. LMA was both a usenet group (a.b.m.thelostmovies) and a website (lostmoviesarchive.com), my other account on here is called theLost. I founded the usenet group twenty years ago as a place to share my rips that were on-topic here for many years before we shifted mostly to emule. I also created a website at the same time that was a bit like IMDb but focused on on-topic movies, and movies that IMDb kind of ignored. Myself and popdrome spent a lot of time screen shotting and adding thousands of entries over many years. Unfortunately it was written in 2005 for a version of PHP that was a real struggle to maintain and scaled poorly, and when I only had a few years of PHP experience. I revamped it once with the plans to rewrite the core but it was hard to find the time, I got sued a few times by companies trying to take it down, my web host did not like the amount of traffic it had and when they expired the last version of PHP that worked I had no choice but to take it down.

I was planning to modernize it and relaunch it but due to some unfortunate timing, I lost the the database and my backups of it, along with a lot of really old stuff that I had archived on an old NAS. I had a raid on it but that did little good when it took 3 meter fall while running. At the time I was quite sure I had another full back up but I have yet to find it. I'm very much a digital horder, I have a closet full of old IDE drives, hoping I have something on one of those I can use to bring it back to life but so far, I have not found it.

Hopefully popdrome is just busy with other things, I know I have been. These days I only really talk with him here. I hope your out there well somewhere old friend.

Remember that Usenet post where Linus Torvalds announced that he just created Linux?

I found something similar in my archive 8-)

I decided to create a new group for posting full length movies after
all. Same stuff I have been posting in a.b.movies.kidstuff. But for
now I will just be cross posting everything to it. At least for a
month or two. Right now thou's using usenetserver.com can see it.
Others will prob have to request it if your interested in the type of
movies I have been posting in "a.b.movies.kidstuff". The new group is
"alt.binaries.movies.thelostmovies" pun intended :-)

It's charter is simple and I see no reason for a lot of rules. Since I
don't really expect any problems other than the regular trolls.

An on-topic post is one that features a female youth.

But first off I use the term "youth" instead of child because I would
say a movie with a teenager is also on-topic (for example "Fucking
Amal"). Also while I did say female. Its not to say a movie with a boy
would be off-topic. Just not to expect much of it. While I did put it
in the movie branch and it will be mainly movies any form of media is
welcome (music, photos, ect). As far as language goes I plan to make
it very clear. There is NO official language. Any language is welcome.
While I will post in English or German most of the time. Anyone is
welcome to post in what ever language they feel comfortable with. The
way I look at it. I could just say everyone post in English. But if
someone's English is not that good. It could be harder to figure out
what they are saying than just trying to translate from a language
they know into English in my case.

That being said it will take time before everyone can see the group.
I'm not really sure how many people download from a.b.movies.kidstuff.
But thou's of you that post and can see the group I would like to ask
for a favor. When you post, can you cross-post to it as well. I'm
hoping to build retention faster.

Wow, I can't believe you still have that. That was literally the day I announced it. Me quoting Rammstein and Conchita... a whole life ago. Can't believe its been nearly 20 years now. I don't suppose you have everything adie and moorvis posted as well? I'm pretty sure the groups I cross posted it too are the ones I'm trying to remember. Probably won't have what I'm looking for anymore but it gives me a place to start.

Thank you!

I have honestly found what you've posted so far to be highly interesting. Thank you for sharing. I would like to learn more of the history of these long term projects you had, even if I know little about usenet, news groups, and php websites. Would you say that your creations inspired or was directly related to the creation of FLM? Were these online spaces for on-topic enthusiasts busy places? Were there a lot of members who posted frequently?

Do you still hoard digital media like you used to?

mimzy, your post from 20 years was a fun read, considering theLost provided some context. Were you involved with these sites back then as well? I see some similarities to FLM's foundational themes.

theLost, if you ever happen across popdrome, tell him I finished those subs for Mariken, so he doesn't have to! Hope you're not now both lost AND broken. (20 years can do a lot to someone)

Hey the Lost!

It's always nice to see an "oldtimer" again. :P

I still regularly visit a.b.m.thelostmovies. It has become pretty quiet there over the last years.

BTW: Are you still in contact with popdrome?

Usenet.... sigh.... where are the days where you could just post anything. There was always some alt.binaries........ group suitable. I miss those days!

No, only as a lurker.

Not everything, but close :P

I also have a copy of LMA movie pages, but only HTML without images, so I guess it won't help much.

Hey Ghost, good to see you too, I downloaded well nearly everything spam and all from LMA going back to 2008, I was kind of expecting it to be dead by now but looks like a few people kept going after I left.

Sadly these days I only talked to popdrome here, I do hope he is ok. A few people have been asking about him.

Well I started posting in the usenet LMA because I was ripping and capping a lot of my own stuff and fell in love with all the foreign things I would have never seen being shared by others. Cute tv shows I still watch from time to time, lots of music as well, was lucky to attend JESC one year and still watch it every year. In fact I spent 10 years traveling around Europe, largely because I wanted to see and really experience it all. LMA the website was just a place to put it all so other people could find it as well. I don't horde much these days, I guess I don't find much new stuff to love like I use too and its gotten a lot easier to watch and find new things from everywhere thanks to torrents. Plus the world is just different now, can't say I care much for it but it is what it is.

I might ask a favor of you, but it might be nearly impossible, trying to find some old music videos. I have been downloading decades worth of newsgroup posts hoping the ones im still missing are in there somewhere. Found some I had forgotten about so far so hoping there is more in there. All the spam makes it a very tiring process so far.

I hope the other old time posters are still doing well, so many names I had forgotten, elmtree, bravo, orange cat, so much to dig thru. And I do hope popdrome is well, I have not spoken to him since I was here a year or two ago.
