If Prime Video is subscription based, why did you have to pay for this specific short film? Doesn't a subscription allow you to stream anything within the prime video catalogue for as long as your subscription is active?

Many movies and series are for free with a prime membership, but not all.

Ah, didn't know that

I've never had prime.. I just assumed it was like netflix (You have a subscription, you can stream anything you wish on the website for as long as you have a membership)
