My new computer

I’m currently setting up my new PC.

In my old machine I have a primary and a slave HDD.
I want to transfer some parts from those HDD's onto the new system.
The slave will be easy, ill just make that a slave in my new PC, but before I do that I want to hook up the old primary HDD that held Windows OS / progs & movie files etc, and move some of the contents onto my new primary HDD.

1. Do I just make the jumpers on the old primary drive slave and then it’s safe to attach?

2. Once the HDD is attached, can I move entire program directories (for example superDVDripper) to the new primary HDD and they will run, or should I reinstall all my old programs?... baring in mind I have no idea what passwords I applied to the programs after there trial periods ended and I paid for full versions (yes I paid but that’s a different topic!).

Now, slightly changing the topic, is anyone here familiar with Dell PC's?
Dell is the system im currently tinkering with and I have to say the thing is beautiful!! Especially compared to my old plastic box!.
My only real complaint is the amount of crap they install on it.
Iv spent most of the time so far uninstalling crap like half a dozen ISP progs / Google index task / macfee (replacing with AVG) etc etc etc

My biggest annoyance is the folders of the uninstalled progs being left behind which just looks messy and pisses me off.
Once uninstalled is it safe to delete the program folders?
So far iv been doing this with no problems, but I don’t want to screw up my system after only a few days usage.

DAM Dell for giving me so much work before I can get to play!

Lastly, this link shows a rough idea of how the inside of my PC looks

If you look where the hard drive is, you will see where I will put the slave in the bottom slot.
The problem is I don’t recognise the cabling, im sure my old pc used IDE for the HDD's.
I’m guessing that the cable to the right hand side of the HDD slots (orange black red black white) is to power the HDD's.
I have no idea what the blue cable is to its leftmaybe its SATA.
The HDD I want as slave is an IDE, so where do I plug that in?
Where is the IDE cable to connect the HDD?

Thanks very much for reading, any help would be appreciated, but please keep it simple :)

I will answer the ones I know. I have hide files and folders deactivated when I delete residual folders and I haven't had any problems yet.

I have been looking thru the specs for the 5150 and cannot find any mention of an IDE controller. Only SATA interface. One answer would be to get a PCI to IDE controller card. Another option is to disconnect one of the two optical drives and use that line however I think you can only use that interface as slave and not master boot disc. (I think that has to be SATA).

My guess is the blue cable is a SATA data cable.

First things first yes those are sata connections if you haven't got a sata drive then you can get a cable which will go from sata to IDE. If I were you I would reinstall most of the software from your old computer. some will run without need of installing but some need a registry entry and in reinstalling you aren't bringing over any problems you may have had from the old system. Once you delete all those 'worthy' :cool problems from your new computer you can just delete any redundant folders on the desktop. yes you can just use your former master drive as a slave to swop the info over just by changing the jumpers your computer should recogniseit straight away

Thanks to both of you for your replies :)

Iv just been informed by someone I know that there should be an IDE slot on my motherboard which I can plug the slave into, but I cant check till tonight after work.

Ill take your advice and reinstall the programs.

Unistalling the other chunk is a real pain though

You will not be able to do this easily... Since your old hard drive is IDE and your new PC is SATA. One way could be to transfert old data from pc1 to pc2 with a netword cable (one that is reversed, the send and receive cable must be reversed. They are not the same coming with cable modem, DLS, etc...)
Nope. Most of your old programs will need DLL and registry key. Some may work, but most of them will not.

Yup. They have great PC and great price, but there is a lot of crap already installed. You still can format the PC when you receive it. But be sure you have everything to reinstall it (a real windows version that can be installed from scratch, not a recovery disk). Or you can install a real OS like Ubuntu... ;-)

Have a nice installation...

wow thanks for all the tips!!!

At last I have the beast running now.

I transferred all my movies to the SATA HDD by way of hooking up my old HDD's to an IDE cable on the rom drives, that was trial and error but it worked :-) although it took bloody ages to transfer the data.

I purchased and fitted a 500GIG SATA to be my slave, what a beauty she is too.
Only problem is the SATA cable that I purchased sticks out too far and wont allow me to put the side back on my PC...... The side-on HDD inserts are a nice idea but done leave much room to close the case, so looks like ill have to buy the DELL cable (the cable on those plugs point upwards).

Iv pretty much ridden myself of all the nasty programs.

Thanks again

Glad you've got it sorted Debaser :cool each time i change computer i end up using DVD-R's to transfer any data across :blush takes a long time also but anything more technical than that and things start to go really wrong :wall lol :)
