Trouble Updating Windows

Hi All

So as I have posted in the past I had to do a system restore on my computer
and lost a few programs and stuff. My next big problem is trying to get my
computer to update all of the new updates for windows about 111 of them.

My computer reverted back to when I got it about 4 years ago so I need these
updates for my computer to run properly. I keep getting a win 32 services error
and it keeps telling me to update my computer, but when I do it fails and has no
error number.

Anybody have any ideas and give me and hand I would greatly appreciate it.

This will help me get back into the emule community faster, which I am missing. :(

If its windows xp then, follow this.

1. Click start, Open run and type "msconfig"
2. Select the services tab on that window.
3. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services"
4. Then click on "Disable All"
5. Now click on the "Startup" tab and click on "Disable All"
6. Click ok and confirm to reboot.
7. After reboot try to perform what you wanted to do.

If this still occurs, then you have to open "Msconfig" again and do a step by step elimination of the services until you find which one is the cause.

Sometimes it is easier to reinstall a clean copy of Windows than to fix it. :bigups

You can try installing XP-Antispy and selecting the 'Windows Update' settings from the menu. I keep the recommended settings normally, but change to the 'Windows update' setting from time to time, update Windows, then go back to the recommended setting.

Look in C:\Windows and you will find a WindowsUpdate.log or similar, the error message you are getting will be in there (usually a HEX event like 0x8007....). Either post here or google that - should tell you what is wrong, BUT....

Clear all cache files before trying WindowsUpdate.

If you have older version of FF try this

Hope this helps

So as far as I can see this is why I can't update

DnldMgr: New download job [UpdateId = {82926A04-8A3C-4AEF-838D-691A3666A458}.101] ***********

111 sounds like way too many... unless one of them is the latest service pack, which should eliminate most of them. (And you always need to run Update again after a major update, because there may be updates to the update.) 111 updates will take a lot of free disk space to download and install, too, maybe as much as a GB.

How are you trying to update? Automatically? Or manually by running Windows Update? Or is it Microsoft Update?

That snippet of log you posted doesn't look to me to say *why* update fails, just that it does. The whole log would be more useful for diagnosis.

You might want to look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166 it tells you how to get the updates directly from their website, bypassing Update. I'd probably grab the latest service pack that way, install it, and then see if Update will then take care of the rest.

Well it has been long and tiring process, but I believe I am getting close to finishing.

I very much appreciate all suggestions and help given, they led me in the right direction.

What I ended up doing was updating each one individually all 112 updates and it worked, everything is done and my computer is working better now.

Thanks again for all your help
