I need a New Computer

I'm going to replace my laptop soon. The one I have currently is 4 years old, 1 gb max ram, 60gb internal drive, no DVD/W, a keyboard which requires a remote keyboard to type, 1.6ghz processor speed. A Compaq Presario. This thing seems like stone age equipment, and yet, if I clean it out regularly it works pretty good. I will probably buy another laptop because it's portable, and like to use it for travel, GPS, free wireless, ect... So my question is: Given this hobby of finding, ripping and releasing movies, which laptop would prove best. Which name brand would be best for ripping movies, and editing with programs like Adobe Premiere Pro or Ulead, And, what about Vista? Would it be better to stay with XP or find drivers for existing XP hardware and upgrade to Vista?

Ripping movies needs raw processing power and lots of disk space. Get a Core2Duo processor, 2GB RAM with a 160GB HDD or better.
Would it be better to stay with XP or find drivers for existing XP hardware and upgrade to Vista?
If you are buying a new laptop, where does the question of existing hardware come from?
If on the other hand you are thinking of installing Vista on your current geriatric laptop, forget it. Vista needs 2GB RAM to run comfortably, and you need a decent graphics adapter too - nVidia or ATi.

Good luck with your quest for a new laptop.
Just as long as the only reason to replace it is because you find the current one unusable rather than society telling you to buy one just top keep up with the joneses.
My Dell Dimension is almost 4 years old, but still looks and feels brand-new, and yet some people would feel the need to replace it just because something better exists.
This is the problem with our crazy consumer culture.
Hell, I was ripping movies with a 512meg ram / 1ghz / 40GB HD machine before this one, and I was fine with that.
Having my new beast (nearly 4 years old) with its 1GB of ram / 3.2 GHz / 500GB HD is like a dream, and could not think of any reason to change it for a very long time.
With 1GB ram I can game, use second life, rip movies while running two P2P progs.
I cannot imagine ever changing anything.
I can’t believe you need 2GB ram for Vista.
Is there a better reason than that to avoid Vista?.... actually yes, lots lol

Yep. Stay with XP and try to get drivers for the new hardware, that's the problem. Dell offers some notebooks with XP SP3 again, but if you want BlueRay-burner only with Vista. I have 1 notebook with XP SP3 running fine and 1 Notebook with Vista freezing once a day, at least. And there never will be Vista drivers for my Siemens S 65 mobile phone...

So is a Core2Duo processor like 2 processors? That's probably what I'll need for a multi-task machine. I mean, now if I'm saving/editing a movie or converting avi my machine freezes until the task has completed.
I asked about Vista because of all the bad publicity, and yet it is now considered industry standard. US companies like Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart don't sell anything without Vista Home thesedays. Fry's Electronics tech people told me even if I send a machine with a Vista OS in to have it downgraded to XP, there's no guarantee it will function properly. No one will guarantee a downgraded system.
Inasmuch as the hype about upgrading to a newer computer... I like my current machine, well except for the burnt out keyboard, and no DVD/writable, but in 4 years I've discovered a number of programs I like to use, but my current computer freezes whenever I use them. Maya, Ulead, Adobe Premiere Pro.... Even simple programs like Nitro PDF Editor are slow.

Maya, Ulead, Adobe Premiere Pro... - You need more power than your notebook is capable. My mac is useless too if I'm rendering a slideshow with Final Cut. In fact you never have enough power.
For conversions I'm using MPEG STREAMCLIP, a great software, available for Windows too.

You should try it, Amadeus.
By the way - I hope your puppies are doing great.

Take care.

You should look into a desktop model for that kind of stuff. There is an nVidia motherboard out that could be just the thing. It allows you to offload some of the CPU intensive tasks to the GPU (the graphics processor) resulting in massive improvements in speed. Also check out the Core2Quad processors.
http://www.tomshardware.com will have more details. Happy browsing.

A desktop model is something I'm thinking about. I take extended trips in my RV whenever I travel, therefore, moving it and strapping it in would not be a problem. But I would most be interested in a small tower. Not sure what is available in a desktop that meet those dimensions, while offering a powerful processor.
Thx willow. I see Miffy has joined the forum. You can embed music here now. I think it is Miffy Bunny Time.
One question: Where can I find Quicktime Alternative 1.81 and not worry about bugs?

Quicktime Alternative 1.81 seems to be available as normal freeware.
Versiontracker.com is a trustable download site so far I know.
[Code]
The latest Version is QuickTime Alternative 2.7.0
[Code] does show where the files are hosted on the download site.
[Code] does list all versions, 1.81 you asked for.
Worry about bugs??? The newest version on versiontracker should be the best choice.
