First Love Templates

Post by Amadeus »   0 likes

The layout is very nice as is, but by design, many bugs. Not sure if a new template will eliminate all the problems but fix many I think... phpbb3 for example.
Anyway, given the fact First Loves is seen by everyone, and we are always looking to improve ourselves, here's a couple phpbb 3.0 ideas from http://www.phpbb.com/styles/db/ There are many others, 2.0 & 3.0, if interested.

Could you please enumerate the problems? I am not aware of any which a style change could help. That's a serious request, I am a programmer and focus more on the underlying engine than the exterior, so maybe I am just not noticing things.

Well, the search function is one them. I can't list all its problems. Then there are the tags malfunctioning in the editing box. Moreover, the shout could use a makeover... enabling html for thumbs and such.

A serious request? :think Not really for Root Admin.

A style change will not affect search one bit. Tags in the edit box might style-related, that issue only came up very recently and I haven't looked at it so I don't know, but possibly. Shout box I don't know about, it's an off-the-shelf module. Keep in mind that changing styles and/or programming for the board is time-consuming and sometimes ghost's time is limited. I am trying to help him a bit, but it all goes through him. But clearly listing issues helps because the fact you have a problem doesn't mean everyone else has seen it or is affected by it or even agrees it's a problem.

By the way, I have found that search actually works quite well if you understand its limitations relating to accented characters etc. (and understand that the problems with newposts isn't actually a search issue per se, it's more a session management issue.) Which is not to say those problems shouldn't be fixed, the newposts problem frustrates me daily. But forum-based search will by its nature never be Google... I experience search limitations on most other forums as well.

Indeed, it can be time consuming, I agree.

But wouldn't it be cool to have say a transparent theme with images of our favorite stars in the background. Glass buttons, shiny borders... A modern interface. We're at the top of our game, rest of the world needs to see that.

1. Maybe a short tutorial displayed on the search page would help. :think

2. The all button to the right of the smilies below could be renamed show all.

3. We need a search titles only option in search.

The rest are not essential, but convenient if available. I only mentioned quotes, but almost everything works that way on some other forums. Select some text in the text box, click the desired button (e.g. bold, italics, size, colour, ) and the desired attribute is applied to the selected text. When the smilie is clicked, the smilie should be inserted at the point where the cursor is, not right at the end as we have here.

Of course no forum I have seen is set up exactly the way I want. There are some things that I wish were different in other forums too.

Don't take this too seriously. The forum works, and that's the main thing. If you happen to have some time to spare and are in the mood for tinkering, then by all means refer to these requests/suggestions and try to implement them.

I used to have a lot of trouble with the newposts thing. However, I have not had those problems of late. Sometimes when I see 0 posts since last visit, I scroll down the list and look at the time of the latest post to confirm, and I am satisfied.
In FF settings for privacy, I have set 'accept cookies from sites', accept third party cookies, and 'keep until I close FF' and in exceptions I have set FLM to 'allow'. Perhaps that might work for you.

Another style wouldn't solve functional bugs in the site script.

Well... the thing is that i am not a programmer and my time is very limited.

The forum is working pretty well and it was a lot of work to customize it in the way it is now. But if someone is familar with PHP Nuke and programming, any help would be appreciated. Just PM me ;)

Call me oldfashioned or whatever, but I quite like the site the way it is right now.
It's functional imo,
