Thanks, I use Robocopy due to reasonable error checking and ability to use switches to achieve most things.

What about using an OS that can copy large amounts of data without needing the help of "small utilities"?

Interface does need some getting used to but I like it for repetitive copy tasks or ones I am likely to want to pause midcopy.

I've used both robocopy and richcopy. While they are both good, and better than what comes with Windows, they were unable to solve my problem which was:

Windows Server 2008 uses optimised disk caching. If the source is faster than the destination and there is sufficient RAM, then the files being copied are read off the source into RAM, then written to the destination from there. The problem is that the progress indicator is way off. E.g. when copying from the fast internal HDD to a 'slow' pen drive, the progress bar would move rapidly to the end and then sit there for ever, showing '0 seconds remaining' for a LOT longer than 0 seconds. Apparently the progress bar is indicating the process of reading from HDD to RAM while the writing to pen drive goes on in the background.

I dare say Richcopy and Robocopy might be better for transferring data over a LAN. I haven't tried that yet.

Teracopy integrates into the Explorer shell; you can drag, drop, copy, paste etc. as usual. No learning curve unless you want to tweak for even better performance.

Getting ready to upgrade a hard drive. Just copied 178GB (over 5000 files) with no trouble at all.
