i noticed that sometimes the numbers attributed to the posters actually go down,is that because only the last 7 days count,so the posts made 8 days ago are chopped off?

Exactly. Each time you open the main page, it counts the posts made in last 7 days. I thought it wasn't a good idea to count the posts since Monday 0:00am (so everybody would have 0 posts on Monday morning).
