It can be brutal enough just growing up a girl. Then add poverty, addiction, and God to the mix. Armed with a gun and a prayer, Emma and her cat bravely go where too many girls have gone before. It's a war, and we gotta win it.

Lemme add another couple-a centavos into the mix:
(Can"t believe it's taken me so long to finally watch this movie. I didn't get the file until April 2024 and finally watched it today. To be honest I was trying to clean up my laptop to give me more HD space for new movies. I was going to delete the file when I thought 'let's just see what this is about' and started watching it. Sooo glad I did!)
This is a GREAT little slice-of-life drama that, though a bit heavy and dark at times, has almost a documentary feel about it. The actors don't seem like actors but like ordinary people. Especially
Audrey Grace Marshall, as Emma, who absolutely carries this film on her shoulders!

(She's onscreen a good 90% of the movie.)
From the opening shot of Emma squinting, staring off into the distance you immediately know this is an independent low-budget production. Then she kicks a slab of stone and starts it (and the film) rolling (in an almost foreshadowing manner) downhill.

But the beautiful thing about this movie is it never gets so dark that that all hope is lost. You are, after all, seeing life through the eyes of a 10 year old inquisitive and very resilient child. A huge amount of crap gets slopped on her plate and Emma takes in stride, maybe not understanding the full reality of the situations but in her childish innocence having a better understanding of the underlying meaning of it all. She never wallows in despair, unlike her parents.
As ghost said; this is highly recommended,

Well worth a watch!

Thanks, kev for giving this movie a positive bump.
I must confess, that I can't remember it at all.

(Shame on me!)
That's surely a reason to watch it again.

I think once you start watching it, scenes will come back to you.

I was enamored with Emma's character as it reminded of girls I've known when I was a child AND as an adult.
As an adult one such child I knew was a six year old girl living with her widowed father who was a disabled veteran. I went to visit one day and he had barricaded himself in their apartment with a shotgun at the window. I think he was pissed at neighbors who were justifiably concerned for his daughter's safety as he drank a bit and had a temper. Someone had notified DCS (Dept. of Children's Services) and an officer was coming to do a 'Safety Check'; THAT is why he had barricaded himself. (His daughter was at his mother's home.)
Unfortunately that stunt cost him his custody. She was taken away and I never saw the child again. I hope she was like Emma and was able to make a better life for herself..

There's a couple of scenes that should whet your whistle! One that's pretty damn chilling...

How could I not remember this movie? (Maybe I just watch too many of them...)
I just watched it again today and now I remember why I have been so enthusiastic about it.
Still my recommendation. It's special.
Thanks again kev for bringing this film back to my mind.
