Movie set in India

ok, here is one...
the movie features a girl who almost gets bitten by a snake as she walks through a market with her mother and sister. There is an indian man watching her.
the girl is approx. 9 years of age.
at night she sleep walks from the house to where a boat is waiting for her - she is supposed to be under the control of the indian man - she is then taken from her mother via the boat.
then the film moves on 20 years or so.
any ideas? I would say it is a movie from late 1980's / early 1990's
