stupidity and disaster..

Hi guys,

Last weekend something horrible happened (well to me it's horrible anyway),
and it's completely my own fault.

I left a window open in my study and left the house.
Then storm and rain caused complete waterdamage in the room.

The computer was shut off so I'm even lucky, it could have been worse,
but 2 big HDD's died. They were soaked and I got advice on if there would be
a chance of recovering the data on the drives, but all say it's a 99% chance of everything ruined.

That means (I had a BIG collection, as many of you know), that all movies/vids are gone,
except for a few (300 or so), that were on 2 other drives that didn't get wet.

Needless to say I had no backup, apart from the original dvd's.

So.. that kind of depressed me and still I'm rather sad about it,
especially because it took a few years to build this rare collection.

I feel stupid because I can only blame myself.

So I'm sorry but I will not quickly be as prolific a contributor that I was,
here, and in the newsgroups.

And I hope you'll tolerate my whining and repost requests, as I expect that will happen.

TTFN,
popdrome

popdrome, damn!!! I'm sorry to hear about the damage and loss of data you incurred. :( Having endured a couple of major crashes and loss of precious memories, I know the experience can be VERY depressing.. :wall

Don't feel whiny at all asking for help in replacing 'lost' [;)] movies [and other data]! I and [I'm sure] the rest of us who have gleaned much from you over the years will be more than happy to help!

The best of luck to you in getting everything repaired/replaced...

kev.

popdrome.........so sorry to hear about your disaster but fair play to you for admitting your own fault rather than attempting to blame someone else.
You've contributed so much here & at TLM I'm sure everyone will be only too happy to help rebuild your collection. Ask away.......reshare requests seem quite successful here!

Take care.......lb

It's exactly as you say 'loss of precious memories', because it feels that way,
not that I watched the movies all the time, it's the inability to access what I had. A feeling of loss indeed.

:(

Thanks Kev for the kind words and encouragement! :bigups

Thanks loverboy you are too kind. :)
It included (apart from the TV series) also many of your quality rips.
First I'll have to find out exactly what is lost, buy some new equipment, and then I'll take your advice.
cheers my friend

When it comes to resharing, I might be useful...

popdrome... before you give up those drives fully, i would try to "dry" them and then try to recover them with softpedias Filerecovery tool. Its free but recovered roughly 85 % of my drive where i kept all tv-series for children from Nordic countries. Excellent tool as long as the sectors have not been overwritten many times.... It could recover files that were overwritten up to 5-6 times so i was mighty impressed by the tool, and in the end scared of how much "trash" it could recover ;)

Ouch. I have been trying to get caught up backing up to DVD, just yesterday I backed up 40GB but I have probably 500GB left to do. Ironically yesterday as that was burning I was collecting and organizing all .aliv. from my various drives into one place for backup.

They say the most economical way to back up these days is to just buy a 2TB external. But every time I buy a new external I end up using it for new stuff and get further behind. And I prefer physical DVDRs which are less likely to be destroyed all at once.

I had actually been thinking of a "popdrome film festival" sometime soon (if you recall my "loverboy film festival" of a while back). I would assume you want your own rips back, though maybe not as a priority if you have DVDs already.

Let us know when you're sure what you lost and want to start downloading replacements!

Hi KJ! No i've so heard today, theres maybe a chance of recovery.
I'm not sure if softpedia is also for Mac but if not there's definately an equivalent.

The drives were just soaked (filled) with water, so I left them to dry but didn't have the balls yet to take a close look at them. This weekend a friend comes and mebbe he'll be able to recover some of the contents.

LOL nope there's definately no trash on them. just beautiful movies. ;)

thanks for the encouragement.

On a side note, speaking of,
do you happen to have a copy of the Danish miniseries Danni? I happened to catch a few scenes
on telly but I can't find it anywhere on the net..

Hey thanks! :bigups

yes?!!! oh man, backing everything up to dvd is such a tedious job! that's probably why I never succeeded doing that...
You should check the s!Xvid tag, it's pretty much on all "my releases"

Good point! This are two 1TB drives. They are drying from their swim.

Thanks FLL!! I'd be honored for the 'festival', and apart from DVD's I kept some of my rips on two other drives so I'm not yet accurate on what I still do/ do not have. I *think* I managed to save my favorites, they were on another drive I *think* but I'm figuring that out as we speak.

Again, thanks for the help! :thumbsup :thumbsup
