[Image][Image][Image]Who knew that Bob Balaban (Seinfeld, A Might Wind) had it in him to take on a not too thinly veiled Lynchian portrayel of suburban orgies and child abuse. At its core Parents is a film about a young boy named Michael who discovers his outwardly law-abiding mom and dad are cannibals. Randy Quaid momentarily retires his Vacation-film goofball comedy shtick to become utterly terrifying. Bizarre and sometimes chilling dream sequences and an additional subplot involving Michael and his next door neighbor explores the naivety of sexual flirtation between children with great care set against the trauma unfolding - helping this sometimes too-easy satire of 1950’s America (Toxico!) with its hokey sausage props to remain one of the most undervalued movies of the 1980s.
