At first, I was getting mere bytes/sec. Now, it is averaging 425kB/s and I'm feeling like it is mandatory that I take it! Right, you are.

Unfortunately it is only a .mpg, which explains why it is so large. Since it is a widescreen movie, much of the 576 resolution is used up by the letterbox black bars. The various much smaller versions that are only 320 resolution are probably much the same effective quality if they crop out those black bars.

Searching by the Cyrillic title "Капитан Джек 1972" gives streaming results in youtube, ok.ru, and vk.com. Some of them are plain 720p upscales. I have not downloaded and compared them with the previously posted versions.

I saw the upscales on ok.ru. I immediately thought a SD 360p or 480p recording would be better. I have not looked at any options on youtube yet, but I do have two downloads from rutracker to inspect.

The rutracker movie is a TV rip.

Kapitan Dzhek = Captain Jack. The Latvian title is "Kapteinis Džeks". The young Inga Mickite who plays the Captain, is Lithuanian and not Latvian.

A movie form the Latvian film director Ada Neretniece (she worked with Eisenstein !).

Thanks for the info, Ludvik. I also have that uloz 111 file. I notice all the sources of this file, whether uloz or rutracker, have the same dubbing. Do you suppose that all versions of this movie are dubbed in Russian? I can imagine that being the case, if it was originally distributed that way.

For example, "The girl with the echo", from the Lithuanian Zebriunas, was filmed in Lithuanian, then dubbed into Russian. Lithuanian and Russian languages have nothing to do with each other. You can see it in the film, because the girl writes on the sand "Paskutinis autobusas", which means in Lithuanian "Last bus". For "Captain Jack", I don't know, but the actors, except the little Inga, are apparently Latvian (consonance of the names). I suppose they shot in Latvian (except for Inga M.), then the film was dubbed immediately into Russian. This was the norm in Soviet times. Personally, I hate dubbed movies, so I rather look for the original versions, no matter the language.
