RATING HIT! But Grumpy Critics Un-impressed (Still wish it was 1965)
From USA TODAY -

Critics weren't so kind, but NBC's three-hour live broadcast of The Sound of Music was a ratings hit.

Final Nielsen figures show 18.6 million viewers tuned in, the network's biggest Thursday audience (excluding football) since the night of Frasier's series finale in 2004.

And even among young-adult viewers, it was the network's biggest Thursday since ER's 2009 finale, and narrowly trailed CBS' top-rated The Big Bang Theory as the night's top program.

Music, adapted from the darker Broadway musical rather than the popular 1965 film that starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, featured Carrie Underwood as Maria and True Blood's Stephen Moyer as Captain von Trapp. It originated from a studio on Long Island, N.Y.

NBC executives – and the rest of the TV industry – were unsure about prospects for the project, which is estimated to have cost well over $10 million. It marked the first time in more than 50 years that a Broadway musical adapted for TV aired live, though earlier shows such as Playhouse 90 were TV fixtures. And like other live programming, it proved a social-media magnet.

Underwood may have proved her singing chops as an American Idol winner and country star, but critics – and Twitter users – derided her acting skills. Still, her home state of Oklahoma proved the show's most loyal fan base: 28% of TV viewers in Oklahoma City tuned in, making it the top-rated of 56 cities measured in Nielsen's overnight ratings.

Ratings hit because people loved the original and tuned in. My bet most tuned out like I did after about ten minutes.

The kids were cute but the adults especially Carrie Underwood were not casted correctly and IMHO ruined it. :(

Fortunately having the movie on Blu-ray I was able to get my beloved view of The Sound of Music back. 8-)

Yeah, from what I heard the negatives was Underwoods acting. She got top marks for the songs, but people said she just couldn,t display emotion in the face. However, even as a fan of the original, which of course can't be outdone, I still look forward to seeing this. I thought the songs above were great.

lol...

You sound like me and my comments about the new 'Carrie'...

You should have stuck with it. The scenes with the children made the whole remake worth the watching. (Something the critics obviously wouldn't give a flying frig about..) And the children had a substantial amount of screen time.

I'll set this DVD side by side the classic when I add it to my library. :heart

kev.

Hope I'm not stepping on your toes donkeykog. . . . (And again - I appreciate all your work).

For those who want a smaller file size (with less quality but faster transfer rates for those with slow connections), here is a smaller file.

A capture screen to show you the quality of the smaller file size. (Click on it for the full size picture).

Many thanks both of you for these releases.. :thumbsup

I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but 'The Sound of Music' was one of those films that the child content was high enough and the music was good enough for me to enjoy. While admittedly the casting/acting for the adult roles left a LOT to be desired in the TV remake, the children made this production work for me. :heart :heart

Looking forward to the DVD/Blu-Ray to hit the shelves.

I wouldn't be too worried about that, vidman... I have a fairly slow connection, but when donkeykog has any file on full release, it loads like wildfire.. :eyecrazy He rivals starfish in his releasing capabilities..

Maybe I'm an exception, but I don't think I'm THAT different from most of our other members...

kev.

EDIT: Another note on the files: From the time that I began accessing both links [around 7:30 am] until now [9:10 am]; I've loaded 2.45 GB's of donkeykog's link to 195.45 MB's of the other link...

Very impressive. Thanks again to both for bringing this to FLM.

The DVD is already available on Amazon.com for like $14.00

And yeah, donkeykog's stuff downloads a lot quicker for me than most other posts as well. He must have a great connection.

Finished watching this last night. Of course it is not as good as the Julie Andrews version we all grew up with, but given that, it wasn't terrible. Carrie Underwood was not too bad - it was the guy who had me cringing a few times. IMHO Christopher Plummer was way better. There were several timing lapses which could easily have been improved with a different take or edit, but this is a LIVE version, so I suppose that is too much to expect. None of the new songs caught my fancy; maybe if I give them a chance they could grow on me, but I don't think I'll have the time to do that. I didn't like that they moved the songs around in the storyline - they seemed out of place and not as natural. They also left out a few important bits, e.g. during the second performance of 'Edelweiss' where it rekindled the patriotism in the public, to the dismay of the Nazi sympathisers.

I kept scratching my head the whole time trying to figure out who the eldest girl reminded me of. Still not sure, but its bothering me, like something lurking just out of reach. Could it be Madeline Zima in The Nanny?
