Plot:

I just watched this. Very entertaining. The young lady was super cute. I wasn't sure if this would count on here, although she is def one of the main character and in most scenes.

There seems to be a surge of horror movies with young girl main characters, or it's just a thing I never noticed before. The Black Phone and M3gan with Madeline and Violet McGraw respectively, 2022 Hatching, 2023 Knock at the Cabin, and those are just the ones I saw. I'm seeing even more as I glance at the 2022/2023 releases. Not sure if it's a trend or just a thing I never noticed.

Then, on the other end of the spectrum you have Orphan: First Kill where they didn't bother to recast and she looks very much like a woman in (AT LEAST) her 20s, even though she is supposed to be around 10.

You are probably right that this is a recent trend, and such things come and go in waves. I think back to the hugely successful "The Exorcist" (1973) and wonder if there was a surge of little girl horror after that. Without doing online searches, so far I can only think of "Alice, Sweet Alice" (1976).
