Oh I very much prefer subs that are
not burned into the picture. For my own personal viewing, I don't speak French and these subs never really get in the way, so they're not too bad, but if I wasn't a native English speaker they'd make it difficult to add subtitles in a different language. You'd have to blot them out and put new ones over them, which degrades the video.
The usual problem with .ts files, shared by .vob, is that yes, you can mux them into .mkv format but if you try to edit them, to remove commercials that are sometimes included or to create clips, they often don't split cleanly at scene transitions and tend to glitch at the join points. Standard h264 based .mkv usually splits where you want it to and plays smoothly when you join a bunch of segments together.
