I watched the end of the German version with the translation of the German in my mind, and I agree with ghost's guess. Without suggesting anything too gross: she had spent her childhood with Archibald and the goat, had hopefully not witnessed a primal scene, and was therefore unfamiliar with how a romantic couple ought to relate to one another in private. Whether she was curious or frightened, she prayed to the Virgin Mary asking about what she witnessed. Hmm.
In episode 3 she was introduced to the concept of prayer so I guess she is still getting used to it, and I don't know what kind of prayers she was making in the rest of the conclusion of the story. But an obvious question for a foundling is "Where did I come from? Was I born from an act of love? Why was I abandoned?" Maybe your translation for the rest of the final episode will give me some insight, and I look forward to it.

I watched the last 10 minutes of the film again, but I really can't answer this question.
They start to make love when Mariken is spying on them. Maybe she means "that's how I was made?". I really don't know. Maybe I'll have to watch the entire movie again to get the context.
Thank you for your input again, Night and ghost. I think I will eek out something from all our speculation. Please don't expect too much from what I put in. In fact, I put in more effort in the following bittersweet scenes after her prayer. One other idea is to wonder if she is saying "this is how it was before I existed/was born" OR "this is how it was before I was here/came along". Though they CAN mean the same thing, the distinction stands out to me because it can make the difference of a number of years (or fingers). Perhaps Mariken can understand that she cannot yet assume they were a couple before she was born, but certainly they could have been before "she came along".
ghost, if you would like to rewatch the movie, please don't let me dissuade you, but I can honestly tell you I don't believe the movie will provide any further context on the meaning.
Thank you to ronyleonel for the Spanish subs. Did you edit them yourself?
Episode 4 will be posted in a few more minutes. Please pardon a potential double post.
