Looking for more 1800's/Early 1900's movie suggestions please?
Looking for more 1800's/Early 1900's movie suggestions please?
Lately, one of my favorite types of film feature young girlhood in 1800s or early 1900s. Examples: The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, An American Girl Holiday, Annie, both Madicken films/series, Iris - 2011, Něco z Alenky, Pollyanna 2003.
I've recently watched and enjoyed both The Secret of Roan Inish 1994 and Fairytale: A True Story 1997.
I fear the well may be running dry, although google isn't too great with international film suggestions so there could be some I'm missing here. I'd love any suggestions, girls 13 and under preferably, particularly around those dates(late 1800s/early 1900s), but a little before or after are also fine, and preferably lighthearted but that's not a set in stone requirement, either.
Thanks for any help!

Also, I feel you might enjoy Heidi (I've only seen the 2015 film)
It takes place during the late 19th century
I plan on eventually seeing other versions of heidi but the 2015 version i quite enjoyed
Edit: Another film I watched was the 2021 Swedish film "The Emigrants"
Pretty long film (2 and a half hours) but it's well worth it
Haven't watched the original emigrants film so i can only recommend the remake

OMG "Little House on the Prairie", an EXCELLENT SUGGESTION!!!!!
Maybe the girls are older than you would like:
The Beguiled (1971 & 2017) 1863
Little Women (tons of versions) 1860s+ (the girls grow up and get married etc so they quickly become too old for FLM)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) 1900
Pretty Baby (1978) 1917
Honorable Mention
Red Beard (1965, Akira Kurosawa) - early to mid 1800s
This 3-hour movie MOSTLY involves a young upper-class doctor learning humility and compassion for the underclass, BUT what keeps ME watching it again and again is a subplot involving a 12-year-old girl rescued from prostitution and a seven-year-old boy she befriends whose family is starving. Well technically those are the ONLY child characters so it is not about "girlhood" but at least I have the right time period!

Thank you a lot of good ones to look into. Youtube has suggested a lot of little house clips and it does look up my alley. Obviously I knew it existed but I didn't know the children played a big part.
Shirley Temple I have a lot of respect for she seemed to have a lot of integrity as a person and I guess did a lot of diplomatic work after Hollywood.
Ive watched a few adaptations of little women especially growing up, I always enjoyed it.
Pretty Baby I bought a long time ago but I've never watched.
