Just thought of this now: since both Night and szijjarto, and Ghost in another thread, mentioned debrid services, I have to wonder- how do they work, which traps should you avoid when using them, and which ones could you recommend? Any resources on that?

I don't know exactly how it works. I think they buy accounts at pay hosters and share them for a little amount of money.
Sure it's not 100% legal (for them, not for you.)

They cost only 4 Euros a month and they offer 52 hosters. Rapidgator, Mega, Pixeldrain...

And you don't have to use their web interface for downloading. You can integrate it in JDownloader2.

But be aware, there are some limitations on certain hosters about how many files you can download per day or how much traffic per day. You should check that before. First you should establish which hosters are important for you (for example rapidgator), than you can choose the debrid service the best for you.
