It is not wrong to skip sequels you are not interested in -- or even the original. If you only want to watch one of them that is fine. The basic concept of the series is simple enough. And it seems to have been adapted to variations in other countries.

I quite like "Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" the best of all the sequels, mostly for the supporting cast.

Emily Osment, younger sister of Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense: "I see dead people.") Osment.
Here she appears as rival spy kid Gerti Giggles, years before she ends up on Hannah Montana as Miley's best friend Lilly.

Gerti and her brother Gary spend much of the movie covered in dinosaur poo.

Taylor Momsen as the President's Daughter Alexandra - and eventually Juni's dance partner {SPOILER}.

This is after she was the sweet "Cindy Lou Who" in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

But before she turned bad girl as the singer for The Pretty Reckless.

Of course there is the return of Carla Gugino & Antonio Banderas as Ingrid & Gregorio Cortez.
The Cortez Spy Kids probably do not realize their parents are total MILF & FILF.

And the debut of Juni & Carmen's grandparents played by Ricardo Montalban (Aka KHAN! from Star Trek) and Holland Taylor.
(Ricardo Montalban is total GPILF!)

Bill Paxton, Steve Buscemi, Mike Judge, Cheech Marin, Alan Cumming... all of them fantastically absurd.

But MOST OF ALL Danny Trejo as Uncle "Machete" Cortez, a geeky spy gadget master like Q in James Bond. Danny spent years building a career in small roles as a Scary-Looking Tough Guy, which is no doubt how Robert Rodriguez came to love him. That is also how he appeared in the earlier Rodriguez action and horror films, until RR made the brilliant decision to put him in a comic role in a children's film. And he is absolutely ADORABLE!

[I won't admit that I enjoy Alexa's teen wiggling onstage at the end of the movie, and I won't post a picture either.]

Watch out... their characters fit the film noir cliche of blondes being BAD NEWS. Not necessarily evil, but definitely trouble and even more so because they are soft and pretty. Whereas I look at Danny Trejo's scarred and leathery face and I can relax because HIM I can trust.

That does seem crazy. But character actors don't put in as much time in a movie as the leads, so a number of those might be a day or two of work for a quick appearance. I also suspect that some of them might not be good movies! ;) But all that work pays the bills, and has to be a hell of lot more fun for him than his early years in prison. Hard experience informed his "bad guy" roles but he turned his life around.
