[REL] Baby Beauty Queens (UK) 2009

Post by loverboy »   10 likes

Broadcast Monday 20th July on BBC3
Along the same lines as 'Sasha, Beauty Queen at 11' but arguably even more distasteful.......one of the less desirable ideas we've imported :wall
As the American phenomenon of the children's beauty pageant hits the UK, this documentary uncovers a surreal new world where nine-year-olds get fake tans and seven-year-olds wear contact lenses.
With the grand final of the first ever Mini Miss UK beauty contest taking place at a leisure centre in Milton Keynes, it soon becomes clear that tantrums and tiaras may prevail over perfect poses and pouts. The mastermind behind the pageant is a middle-aged ex-beauty queen, who plans the entire event from her stairwell in Colchester.
The film follows three girls and their mothers in the lead up to the big event, and as they prepare to dazzle the judges the real reasons why they are all desperate to be crowned Mini Miss UK become apparent. From the evangelical Christians who are convinced that God will help them win the pageant to the disadvantaged kid for whom the contest holds the key to a better life, the film portrays an eccentric, and at times disturbing, snapshot of modern Britain.
It's one thing for parents to want success for their children, but quite another to enter them in a pre-teen beauty pageant. This alarming and sad film follows the primping of entrants for the US-style Mini Miss UK contest: one nine-year-old cries when sprayed with fake tan; another wears contact lenses and had cosmetic surgery at seven. Behind the inappropriate make-up and misplaced ambition lies the odd positive story of boosted confidence, but the tears and glum faces at the end say it all. So many types of wrong it's hard to know where to begin.

Thanks lb!

It's funny, last night I was googling British TV listings for a different show hoping I could ask you to cap it (you can't -- no more showings scheduled, I discovered it too late)
when I came across this one. Which I thought I was also too late on, but not!

Well I've watched this a couple of times now..............quite honestly, the first time I got pretty angry about child exploitation & parents forcing their offspring to succeed to make up for their own inadequacies but things improved second-time-round.
I even began to find it amusing but pathetic watching the Born-Again-Christians praying to Jesus to help their none-too-pretty tarted up nine-year-old win.............sad, but priceless!
The most uplifting part for me was the performance of 7-year-old Sasha (pictures 1, 7 & 8)..........even her motives (& those of her mother) appealed to me. Her entry was done on a shoestring budget in the hope of a prize to improve the fortunes of her financially poor family. No, she didn't win or even get placed but her goal was to overcome nerves to actually make it on stage to perform her routine. It's pleasing to see in the end credits she's subsequently had a couple of modelling jobs & her confidence has soared.
Some may find it disturbing but well worth watching & something we ought to get used to.............a 2010 contest is already being planned!

I've been having problems recording/capturing TV programmes that appear to be a direct consequence of my cats getting behind the TV/AV equipment, using it as their personal playpen & 're-arranging' the cabling. I thought I'd solved the problem only to discover a recording I made over the weekend was faulty. :wall The same thing happened when I tried to record something again last night. I'll probably post a topic in greater detail to see if anyone can help.
Anyway, the purpose of this post........
This was the one I attempted to record last night. Those who watched 'Baby Beauty Queens' will doubtless remember Madison, the little God-Bothering nine-year-old rather prone to sulks & tantrums. Well it appears Madison's stupid mother has spent so much money spoiling the girl she is now in serious financial difficulties & faced with selling the family home to repay her debts. Enter Jo Frost, a parental 'life coach' to advise those too inept to understand the concept of proper parenting. We follow Madison through her sometimes painful 'transformation' from a little shit to........probably still a little shit!
I've edited this to show that part of the programme which features Madison & her family. The entire programme is available as a torrent on thebox as 'Jo Frost Extreme Parental Guidance' transmitted 16th Feb on CH4.

Not much for the exploitation of kids, yet I love the eyecandy.. :( Damn this conundrum I'm locked in.. :think

Well, nonetheless; Thanks for ripping and posting these, lb!! I'm sure I'll view them with the proper, um.. disdain and disgust they rightly deserve. ;)

As far as your kitty problems go.. :eyecrazy That's really an odd problem, although probably not all that unique.. Good luck with it! :thumbsup

I like natural beauty. Little girls wearing makeup aren't IMO beautiful at all, and children's beauty pageants are simply perverse.

"Beauty" contests, "modeling", and the like are mostly meat markets, and many of these kids have huge egos - they're so used to being told how beautiful they are and being catered to like royalty that they turn into demanding little b****es before they turn 10. I'd rather be acquainted with an "ugly" sweet-natured person than a "beautiful" self-centered one of any age.

BLT, Phuzzy242 and others that share your opinions, it's pretty simple really:

:) Don't d/load or watch these releases! :)

I, for one, am very appreciative of these films.

Many thanks again, lb, for ripping and releasing!! :thumbsup

I didn't say I didn't like them or appreciate them, because I do. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. :)

1. My comment (as well as Phuzzy's, I think) was about children's beauty pageants, *not* about this particular release.

2. Apparently I have more or less the same attitude towards children's beauty pageants as loverboy, who was the releaser in the first place.

3. I generally don't see anything wrong with negative comments. It's IMO better than not commenting at all.
