Well, VLC and Media Player Classic don't recognise it, MediaInfo tells me the L:B ratio is wrong...guess I need anamorphotic glasses...

unless the aspect ratio is way off it bugs we when i hear "this is not correct aspect ratio". it is easy to right click in vlc, mpc, etc.. and change to a aspect ratio that looks right to you. although it is nice not to have to change anything. i too have several external media players and a few don't have the option. correct aspect is only relative to the monitor or tv you are viewing the movie on. this file is of good quality. that to me is more important

Congratulation, you managed to get the aspect ratio even worse:

WMV2: 720x576 = 0,8 = 5:4
Your avi: 688x560 = 0,81395 = 5:4,xxx...

It should be 16:9 as in the file title indicated, for example 720x405...

MPlayer says the following:

Movie-Aspect is 1.75:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [xv] 688x560 => 978x560 Planar YV12

It is 1.75:1 instead of 1.78:1 (16:9), because I cut off the black edges.

All of my recent rips are anamorphic and I've only seen a complaint about "Ikke Naken", but lb said that it plays OK in MPC (https://www.first-loves.com/forums/v ... 698#p36698).

Looks like in addition to display aspect ratio (DAR), also pixel aspect ratio (PAR) is defined in avi. DAR = PAR * (width/height)

I set correct DAR (1.75:1), but PAR is still set to 1:1 (square pixels). MPlayer seems to use DAR, but other players only care about PAR. That would explain why my other anamorphic rips display correctly (when encoding from DVD, correct PAR is set automatically).

Yeah, I failed, but hopefully I learned a lesson
