I didn't mean for my comparison to be harsh, though reading it now it DOES come across as a slight.. Sorry.
Obviously Oingo Boingo didn't start as a commercial act.. They were the same thing; guys jamming, coming up with something 'different' for the hell of it. When they started their music was considered very avant-garde and very non-commercial.. (They didn't have the benefit of the internet when they first started, where pretty much anything can go..)
For OB, though, their music gained a following and they lucked out [or sold out, if you will] and did, indeed become 'commercial'.
My comment to you midway through my previous post however, appears to be wrong:
