I feel like I stumbled upon an alternate FLM world
are we the only ones that see what is going on here? :cool

Quilty disappears and the thread goes into limbo :think

post edit: Quilty's account has been deleted and now any thread he started is in limbo

Nothing particularly new going on here, it's happened and been explained before.

EXCEPT... the only known proven instances of database corruption like this were 2005/2006, not since 2009. :think

(Unless ghost deleted his account; he's the only one who can delete accounts and I doubt he did.)

The thing is this. When the board software displays a topic listing in the forum index or in search results (new posts), it builds one line per topic which includes the first post author and the latest post author. If either of those people no longer are in the database or have corrupted entries, the line can't be displayed and goes poof. And similarly, within the thread the posts by that user don't show, probably still in the database though.

So this thread won't show up in the Italy forum or in new posts or the old search. It does show up as the "Last Post" in the Italy forum on the main forum page since that page doesn't show the topic originator.

The new forum search does things completely differently so this topic and any others in this state are findable there.

I will look at this tonight to see what can be done and how many threads are in this state, right now I am off to bed.

Do we have DB backup?

Of course. But the real question is: Do we have a DB backup from just before the database problem occurred? Probably not-- we don't yet know exactly when that was, it could be over a year ago. Problems which take a long time to surface are a real problem for databases.

But that may not even matter-- we don't know what's actually gone yet. There is a big difference between deleting database entries and changing one minor detail which makes those entries unable to be displayed.

If the latter, which is quite possible, it's an easy fix. In fact, my quick check indicates that Quilty's posts, 82 of them, are probably still there but inaccessible.

I'll get on to ghost and see how he wants to approach it. I can probably fix it if he is available.

What I really want to figure out is whether this is an isolated incident or not, and whether others were affected.

Stay tuned.
