Or should we just go for the standard 'thanks' mod anyway?
Thanking Posters
Re: Thanking Posters
We might need something to motivate releasers, though. If I've got some time I might implement something myself. One idea would be 'Do Want' button -- ed2k links would be hidden until the user clicks 'Do Want'. Releaser would get one point for each click. Hmm, wonder if that would be something useful

I agree wholeheartedly. K.I.S.S. The simpler, the better and the less likely to break.ptguardian wrote:My vote is simple is best. Less to mess with is less to mess with.
mimzy, perhaps something like Facebook's "Like" button that shows the total "likes" for a particular message near the "Edit Delete Quote" buttons on each message? Someone could "Like" a post even if it wasn't for a release. Probably not simple to create, but maybe not too bad.
Re: Thanking Posters
I have never used Facebook, but I imagine what you mean. I guess it would be a simple modification of the 'thanks' mod -- just display a count instead of the list of users. Should there also be a 'dislike' button?Phuzzy4242 wrote:mimzy, perhaps something like Facebook's "Like" button that shows the total "likes" for a particular message near the "Edit Delete Quote" buttons on each message? Anyway, it might be a good motivation if the total number of received 'thanks' or 'likes' of each user would be displayed next to the total number of posts.
I wonder if there would be a need to hide ed2k links until a user has 'liked' the post? This might cause some frustration if the file turned out to be porn...

Re: Thanking Posters
No, don't hide the links. That defeats the whole reason to "like" something because EVERYBODY will click it just to get the link. The poster isn't getting thanked, they're just seeing how many times someone wanted the file.
Re: Thanking Posters
I think that would be the idea of this system, to find out how many members wanted the file. Secondly, each "like" would add a point to poster's account, so we could have a sort of competition for "top ten" releasers. Maybe this would bring more life to this board. If somebody wants to thank the poster specially, he is welcome to reply as usual.Phuzzy4242 wrote:No, don't hide the links. If links can be seen without liking (in fact, currently without even logging in), people may forget to thank later. It often takes a while to download and then it takes a while until one has time to watch the movie and by that time it may be hard to even remember from which board the link came from. I've got the impression that many releasers expect response already before the file has finished downloading...
The current idea is to hide the links (probably show the filename, but make it unclickable) until "like" is clicked. There would be an "un-like" link to undo the "like" if the file turned out to be uninteresting after all.
I'll experiment with this next weekend if I have time.

"we could have a sort of competition for "top ten" releasers"
We have more than 10 releaser's?
How about the ed2k links be only available to members signed in? This way we can keep the sharing more inclusive to the site. If I want to share to everyone on the web I would be posting on torrent not the mule. Sharing here is more like sharing to friends and family.
As for the like or not like button. I don't care if we have it or not. I say what ever you want to maintain because it is you who are doing so.

Re: Thanking Posters
I kinda like the idea of only showing links to members but that would just bloat the membership list with people who will still never post. Besides, in a "top ten competition" the old-timers (many who aren't even here any more) will still win hands-down - there's no way the rest of us can ever catch up.
I think we need to step back and decide what's actually wanted and needed before making changes to the board - we don't want to cause more problems than we fix.
I've often forgotten to thank releasers because of the time between clicking their link and actually watching the movie. I'd rather comment on the contents, not just say "thanks for releasing". Someone has a right to be a little upset if nobody comments, but there might be other reasons such as it's off-topic, the file is too big, there are no sources, etc.mimzy wrote:If links can be seen without liking (in fact, currently without even logging in), people may forget to thank later. This just means another button to click, nothing more. People should be able to be "like" or "unlike" ANY post, whether it has a download link or not. Also, links to screenshots, RFF and IMDb, and even links to other posts in FLM might have to be "liked" before they're clickable.mimzy wrote:The current idea is to hide the links (probably show the filename, but make it unclickable) until "like" is clicked.
