Hmmm, I like the first Man on Fire better, it was not so overly protective of the actress. But for sure, Washington and Fanning are great actors, and the production values are high. So, for drama and production value, the remake. But the first one feels more OT. Your mileage may vary.

** edit ** oh it's a top 10, not a top ten wanted, oh well lol

My top 10 would be mostly Czech, not for OT but for the feel 8-) :heart

Of course, Leon, as the converting material for so many of my generation would be top too :thumbsup In line with governing statistics, I guess, either Chloë, Jodie, Eva or Brooke would be the same for others

All have been found now from my era of searching, so much amazing work  and remastering by a certain individual ;)

Did Denkste! Das Baby meines Bruders (1985) episode get the release?

From my REQ's that I've been looking for for 20+ years, only...

Igra s oganya (1982) <- I want this one for interest really, no OT
Heaven and Earth (1987) <- hmm was originally listed at CVMC
Riders (2001) <- this will never be found it was for film festival only
Pas sages (2004) <- the title makes it so difficult to find and was TV movie I think

Also, the illusive Spermula (1976) directors cut, if it even exists lol

Oh also there was on episode of Fleur de Lampaul where the group with girls were going through a jungle and topless and ducked under the water, would also like to see that again :heart but so many episodes / variants, difficult to pin to an episode!

Considering the quantity of movies available at FLM, it is great to have curated recommendations like this. Thanks to everyone that shared their list, I have discovered many that I want to watch here. About my list, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. ;)

Best I can think of for my top ten:

10. Moonlight (2002) -- many who are here already know about this one. But did any of you have a similar experience with it when you first got to see it? When I first downloaded it, I knew right away it was a COA story that would be right up my shameless little alley, but it wasn't shared at a dedicated place like this. So it was like finding it in a more personal area, no one else was curious about it. The music of the opening titles still haunts and saddens me to this day. However, it has a comforting quality to it, doesn't it? When the main girl doesn't shy away from the boy she finds, and instead tries to help by peeing into a bucket, right in front of you, I knew we were in for a a very strange treat of a movie. And when she goes on her journey with him (no spoilers), you really think about all the comfort she's leaving behind. But the story and characters take you on such an odd journey! It's the kind of storytelling that you won't guess what happens next due to extreme familiarity of the usual tropes. It's another film where you just want to reach in and grab the two of them to help and hug them, but you know they would never accept your attention.

9. Beneath Clouds (2002) -- an excellent, resonating COA tale from Australia that I don't see shared here. It's a film about the unlikely friendship between a couple of Australian teens with varying degrees of aboriginal descent. Don't let that dissuade you from giving this one a try, a story and characters are amazingly portrayed. The main girl goes on a long trek and it becomes something of an adventure once she meets up with the main boy, and they try to reach their city destination. As the short imdb plotline states, for a very brief period of time, they experience and share moments of rare happiness. The setting and atmosphere of the film really draw you in and before you now it, you're following them on their journey and you don't want it to end.

8. Blue Gate Crossing (2002) -- another one that I don't see shared here. I have the dvd and a rip of the film, I'd like to share it here. It is an lovely, touching COA tale between a guy and girl in a Taiwanese high school. There's no nekkid scenes that I recall but in this case, it's all about the scenario, the drama of the composition. The way they meet and how their relationship comes about is so well done and relatable. The two characters exhibit this sort of competitiveness and overt dislike of each other that is amazingly performed. I loved the little bike-ride contest scene, and by the time you get to the dramatic school desk/chair shoving scene, you get totally wrapped up in what's going on.

7. Voleurs de Chevaux (2007) -- it was given the unfortunate English title of 'In the Arms of my Enemy'. It's one of those movies that, while it isn't the best film, the situation in which you watched it and the newness and strangeness of it all surpasses all that and you're left in awe of what you're seeing. It's initially the tale of two young impoverished brothers in 1850s France joining a Cossack troop passing by and who get involved in fighting and revenge with another set of brothers. Different than what most people share here as it's more male focused, which is why perhaps the film is not shared here. It is quite a good movie, though.

6. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (1995) -- such a haunting and touching film. It's as much about the grown male lead as it is the young girl he meets. Film not afraid to dwell on the depravity and griminess of the characters. Like in Lawn Dogs, I adore characters that are aged similarly. It creates such a tension to the atmosphere yet you cherish their scenes together. One of the lines from the movie still sticks in my head, spoken slowly: Then listen to this fucking Chinese music and shut-up. The minimalist soundtrack provided by Wim Mertens works strangely well with the film.

5. Lawn Dogs (1997) -- I guess I'm not the only one who's been so affected by this movie. I came across this one while at university back in 2001. Nothing like it had really been shown on tv where I live before, and I don't think it would be shown nowadays. This is another film that shaped the sort of movies I wish to see the most. The characters, totally imperfect but reacting to the oddity and unkindness of their environment, was a very noticeable and understandable theme to me. The connection between the two lead characters was very endearing and I loved it when they had scenes together. It is possible from this film I gained my love of stories with characters that are similarly aged and connected.

4. Nobody Knows aka Dare mo shiranai (2004) -- although I loved COA films before having watched this one, this film likely helped to shape the sort of films I seek out nowadays. It was one of the first I ever watched where my feelings were the strongest to want to reach in and help and hug those depicted. Totally immersed in the story. Lovely, minimal soundtrack as well.

3. Mysterious Skin (2004) -- not sure what made me watch this movie in the first place, but before this, I don't think my friends and I had ever seen something so intensely dark released here in the States on dvd. I remember being very affected by it, though it may seem somewhat more tame by the average viewer of darkfilm. I went on the read the book, a somewhat more of trudgey of a read

2. Låt den rätte komma in (2008) -- I know everyone has heard of and seen this one, but when it first came out, I was riveted and even read the book as soon as it was released in English. Man was that girl cute!

1. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) -- not sure if counts here, but I feel there qualifiable coming-of-age elements here with an appropriately aged character. Not to mention the moodiness and atmosphere of the setting. Before I saw this movie, my favorite films we mostly the same as everyone else my age.

Honorable mentions:

Les Diables -- I LOVED this bro/sis stuff, and I know what you discover in the end, but still man, I love a good movie that doesn't shy away from touchy subjects.

Charlotte Forever -- hell yeah, well, considering everything else mentioned above is listed out of sheer love of the storytelling and characters, I really ought to share with you some of my more depraved choices. I totally enjoyed this one and watched it several times. I like Serge's set up, his fake outs, the music he and Charlotte did for it.

The Cement Garden -- a bit more austere of a film, but considering it's title, it's definitely what they were going for. Charlotte's previous movies led me here. Takes a while for the story and characters to sink in, but by the ending you are totally hooked and hoping things could last just a little bit longer.

Bare Bea aks Just Bea -- Great Swedish COA movie, filmed in a more trendy style as if for trendy teens. Still, I totally enjoyed this movie and Bea's character and her younger sister was great, too. I love the scene where she asks if she can hit on Bea's love interest if Bea ain't gonna do anything about him. Great uplifting feeling in one, def more of a feel good movie.

Mikres Afrodites aka Young Afrodites (1963) -- I remember being very enamored with this one though I don't recall much about it right now. It was very beautifully filmed with some beautiful girls in it. It's been so long that I know if I watch it again, it'll almost be like for the first time. I remember a soft film visual quality and a very easy, pleasant pace. And I remember wanting the movie not to end!

Mondscheinkinder (2006) -- Lovely COA movie! I knew right from the outset, hearing the girl's narration and the cartoon opening, that I would love this movie. I adored the girl's character and her love and care for her brother. Super cute too!

Le Necrophile -- hell yeah more degenerate selection thrown in. This one actually had me involved enough I was worried what would happen to the man, even though he was despicable, and I was surprised by the ending. Maybe I'm an easy viewer heh.

Jack the bear (1993) -- even though not one of the best films and it doesn't really hold up, it's like one of those films you can't live without. Loved the main boy lead character and tension they build up during the main dramatic twists midway through and near the end. I enjoy this one enough that I purchased the book, way back in 2002 or so, and read it vigorously. One should note that -- of course-- the overall somewhat uplifting feeling of the movie was changed from what was in the book, which was more of a general feeling of despondency of the family. I remember the last pages being so sad to me that I almost felt like puking. Not sad for anything traumatic that happened, but for seeing all the characters at the end just so far gone.

Naissance des pieuvres aka Water Lilies -- I'm surprised by how much of my selections or more male focused when it's the girl centric characters I feel like gravitating to. I loved the situations and scenarios they set up between the two main girls in this movie. Definitely recommended for a classic sexual awakening COA tale with cah-yoot girlies!

Little Monsters -- old favorite of mine when I was younger. Watched it again during my twenties (years ago) and I stilled enjoyed the piss outta it. Adored the whimsical sets and the crazy cool acting of Mandel.

12 and Holding (2005) -- I remember being very affected by this movie and the characters it depicts and the stories they go through while growing up. It tries to tie together several child characters rather than focusing on one or two, but it gets the job done pretty well for a US production after the 2000s. Heh it can't all be bad in the States, can it?

Mouth to Mouth -- perhaps Page's best COA movie. I remember I really got into this one, even though some of the situations didn't catch me quite as much. But the movie starts out tells its story way different than anything I was expecting. I had no idea what was going to happen most of the way through the movie! It's about a girl that gets involved with this group of people with sorta cultish leanings, but you know, everything's cool at first. And the movie takes you on a cool strange journey and the dance scene between the two left at the end was just MAGICAL.

The Witches (1990) -- the one based on the Roald Dahl book, the old one, not the unfortunate new one. A favorite of mine when I was young. My dad showed it to me when I was young enough that it frightened me. The scene where they they brutally change the fattie into a mouse still incredible!

The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2005) -- A lovely COA take about a girl dealing with her bizarre, opinionated father who's just trying his best with what he has along with trying to defend the land while never really going about it the right way. The girl is magnificent, and the father, well, he is played by the inimitable Daniel Day Lewis. Camilla Belle is perfect as the girl here.

The Chumscrubber -- fantastic though sorta contrived movie about a teen kid dealing with a friend's suicide amidst a suburban hell/paradise of drugs and two-faced adults all the while getting involved with a light-hearted kidnapping. The film also has this fantastical element going on that hard to explain, but it keeps you from guessing everything that's going to happen. Camilla Belle in this one as well and she's cute and hilarious.

L'effronte -- not really a favorite, but you gotta love Charlotte. She does great at playing characters you're never supposed to like but who you understand for. Once again a lovely COA tale.

The Woodsman (2004) -- heavy movie about a man, played by Kevin Bacon, struggling with being a pdo. I loved this movie though, and the scenes he has with Robin are instantly engrossing. Check this scene out!

There are many mentioned at FLM as well as lists of recommended OT and COA stuff out there I know I still have yet to watch, such as:

En kärleks historia
fucking amal
is-slottet
mit liv som hund
ogginoggen
pretty baby
l'enfant d'eau
piccola labra
tomboy

I know some of these may make it into my faves some day.

Wow, what an amazing list! I am familiar with several of these. Several others if they are not at FLM already, certainly belong here.

:( I know, Sully. They stop short of that good, sweet exploitation.

Thanks Night! Maybe next time I'm on, I can check in with you about sharing three of these films. I'll tag my list with links for those that are already shared.

(a belated) Welcome to the forum mister (I assume) Pillowbaker, and what a lovely top ten post!
I like and have most of your top ten mentions. My favorites cannot be put it a top ten because it changes every year, I'll have the obsessive behavior that I'll want to keep editing the list so I won't go there. I LOVE Ai, Les Diables and Le Necrophile. It's so macabre, I like that stuff.

Have you seen https://www.first-loves.com/forums/view ... t=geschenk "Stefanie's Geschenk'? You might like that one too. Maybe a little too weird for you. Check it out! And seeing your list what are your thoughts about City of the Lost Children and Le tout nouveau testament ?

If I have time today I'll post a HD upgrade of The Cement Garden.

Do you own most of the movies, downloads or maybe even disks?

Anyway thanks for your great post! Talk soon!

kind regards
