I have deadman's file because English is my language, and I was not around here in 2014 for jezevex's version anyway. But at least a TS file can be converted to an easier-to-use MKV if needed. I would think that someone who fully understands French might think "Ew yuck, get this English crap off my movie!" I know I would not care much to watch an English language move with hardcoded French subtitles either. I have one English movie with Dutch subtitles because that is the ONLY source I could find. It annoys me.

Thank you deadman for evaluating the differences!
I completely agree with you. 100/100. :)

Oh I very much prefer subs that are not burned into the picture. For my own personal viewing, I don't speak French and these subs never really get in the way, so they're not too bad, but if I wasn't a native English speaker they'd make it difficult to add subtitles in a different language. You'd have to blot them out and put new ones over them, which degrades the video.

The usual problem with .ts files, shared by .vob, is that yes, you can mux them into .mkv format but if you try to edit them, to remove commercials that are sometimes included or to create clips, they often don't split cleanly at scene transitions and tend to glitch at the join points. Standard h264 based .mkv usually splits where you want it to and plays smoothly when you join a bunch of segments together.

DvDrips are mostly made by me with AnyMP4 DvdRipper, using the lossless option.
The dvd rips I obtain this way often have various defects. In this case, I load the dvdrip into MKVToolnix and have a good MKV movie in output.

If I want to make a file out of a DVD movie I usually mount a disc image (which I may have to create from the files) then use the old program DVD Decrypter to extract the .vob as a single unbroken file. Bluray players and TVs that can read flash drives will play a .vob file, and of course they play fine on any computing device.

Occasionally there are discs where a processed and re-encoded video actually looks better than the original .vob - but otherwise there's no better way to get a lossless copy than not re-encoding at all.

As if anyone were interested.
Film provided by jezevex converted lossless to mkv format.

Playback via (for example) VLC player noticeably better.

Is there a certain amount of lossless compression involved when converting to mkv? I am just curious because jezevex's file was 4.15gb.

Is the playback better by the quality of the displayed resolution, or does it play smoother?

The video quality and encoding is the same in both cases.
The difference is that when playing a .ts video, pixellosis appears when scrolling with VLCplayer and the same action for an mkv file does not have this disadvantage.

The conversion time from ts to mkv is about 2-4 minutes. There was no advanced video conversion or recoding there. Rather, it was sorting out the stream and changing the format.

endurro, I am curious -- what software do YOU use to do your TS to MKV conversion? Also MKVToolnix?

I have noticed myself that a lossless conversion of TS to MKV produces a slightly smaller file and do not know why. MKV is a more compact "container" maybe, like a big man wearing tight clothes?

Also, in VLC and some/most (not all) other media players, an external subtitle will not play with a TS. So if someone had VLC, a French unsubtitled TS, and an external Spanish SRT subtitle they wanted to play together, they would either have to use a different media player or convert the TS to an MKV.

I used MKVToolnix. Without selecting any changes. I simply load the ts movie into the program and start saving.

EDIT
The subtitles that are supposedly in the ts file are not actually there.
Selecting 1 or 2 subtitle track does not display anything.
Subtitle Edit is also unable to generate subtitles from these tracks.
The third subtitle track is a hard version of the French subtitles.

Of course, the same situation is in the mkv file.

that a lossless conversion of TS to MKV
MP4, TS, MOV or MKV... are just containers. The H.264 vdeostream stays the same, when you remux it to a different format. There won't be any diference of picture quality.

So it's not converting, it's just remuxing.
